Resurrecting this one from the depths as I've been offered an Orange-locked Hero and was also wondering if it was possible.
Anyone had any success at this?

The hero can be unlocked. But you will need to take it to a shop.
Not sure on pricing, but I'd be shocked if it cost more than ?15

        Thanks for the reply.

Hope you're manging to make use of your itgate these days.

I went to a shop this afternoon and they said it will take three days and ?35. Hmmm.
I'll have a look elsewhere. Thanks again.

        Tony

Try ebay. There are some reputable people out there who unlock HTC's of about ?8 - ?10 via code

Reading this suggests it's relatively straightforward.

Unlock code for ANY HTC HERO & TOUCH HD ON ORANGE UK on eBay (end time 19-Sep-10 21:46:18 BST)

But then I read something like this and I start to doubt it.

Not sure whether it's worth the risk.

The ebay listing states they are getting the code from a database. They will have connections to someone in Orange.

It should be ok to use, they are offering a 100% refund if not available.

The problem is that while I might get my money back for the code I wouldn't for the phone.

You've lost me there. You want the hero unlocking so you can use it on another network. Unless you paid more than ?150 for it you will be able to get the money back.

The Hero is still a high value phone on ebay. Request the code from the ebay listing, if they can't supply it, sell the ~~~~er on ebay.

I bought my unlock code for ?6.50 from ebay user gsmfoneuk.

My phone was locked to orange network but I had rooted the phone and was running a 2.2 image (froydvillain) and the unlock code worked fine.
