APPS TO MAKE YOUR MOBILE PHONE EVEN SMARTER

Want your mobile phone to plan dinner parties, read barcodes and identify birds for you? The only way is apps...

Until recently, feature-packed smartphones were the preserve of geeks and gadget-hungry 'early adopters'. But thanks to the arrival of the iPhone and its rivals, all that is starting to change.

In fact, while manufacturers are struggling to make a profit from standard - or 'dumb' - mobile phones, the smartphone market is expected to grow by an impressive 22 per cent in Europe this year.

Yet most smartphones have similar features these days: touchscreens, music playback, internet and camera - so why has interest in high-end handsets suddenly soared?

The answer is simple: smartphones have become easy to use, and easy to personalise with cheap applications, or 'apps', that can be downloaded over the mobile phone network.

There's no longer any need to hook your handset up to a computer - all the major smartphones now come with their own 'app store', a virtual shop that allows you to painlessly extend your phone's functions into an area of personal interest, from birdwatching to astronomy, globe-trotting to shopping.

We've rounded up a selection of the best apps, below, but there are thousands more begging for your attention.

Apple pioneered the 'app store' concept, so it's no surprise that the iPhone has a far larger and more varied app catalogue than its rivals.

But with other manufacturers catching on, there's never been a better time to put the power of a smartphone to work for you.
