I cannot speak about the iPhone or HD but I do own an HTC Kaiser which I have found to be a reliable device, I say device because it is much more than a phone and I have been impressed with the amount of software available and the ability for continually upgrading the feel of the device; I have been seriously considering the HD2 for sometime now but cannot justify the expense as I've been able to add functionality to the Kaiser as I've seen new software. I have to admit I've never been bitten by the Apple bug and have always used windows devices. Hope this helps.

I think you definitely have to go 3GS. The iphone is unmatched in UI and features right now.

HD2 are good phones 1ghz processor in them, try going in to a shop and playing about with one and see what you think of them :-)

T-Mobile have them for private customers, depends on if you want to stay with your network.
