Android 2.2 update for Samsung Galaxy S

I have a Samsung Galaxy S.

I understand that the Froyo update is coming my way soon. Will the phone promt me to do this automatically or will I have to go and search it out?

Will it be straightforward? (I'm into modding phones off my own bat and I can't see my interest taking off anytime soon - simple is good in this area for me.)

should prompt you when the download is ready. My HTC Desire did, when the 2.2 update became available.

Updates are generally rolled out over a certain period, say a week or two, so as not to overload the servers.

Unbranded handsets will get the update first and then the networks test it and will release their version once it's complete.

What network are you on?

If your on Tmob, I wouldn't expect anything soon, my mates Hero's (G2 Touch) are still running Android 1.5/1.6 and my mates Tmob Desire, is still 2.1.

It's an unlocked handset and I'm using a Tesco sim, so if it's the networks that are in control from what you say I may not receive it automatically.

Would it possible to update via the Samsung PC software do you think?

Did you have it unlocked, or was it supplied that way from new (SIM free)?

If it's SIM free then you will get the update as soon as it's released. If it was unlocked then you'll be waiting.

The Samsung software should be able to check for updates.

It was a private purchase but I don't think it has ever been locked to a network. It came from Carphone Warehouse originally I believe.

Let's hope the update is available soon anyway.

Yeah, Unlocked and unbranded are 2 different things.

Try using Kies (samsungs PC software), let me know if you have any problems with kies, as I had a nightmare, but finnally got it working with the GF's Galaxy S

I know kies shows firmware updates.. I just updated my GF's from JF3 to JM1, but this has nothing to do with the operating system (still running 2.1 after the update)

updates should be OTA (over the air), so you should be notified when it's ready, and not need to plug into a PC. I've heard a rumour, that it's going to be around 23rd when they start rolling it out.

Kies is just about useable - a real dog though. What is it with phone software? I'll keep an eye out for the update.

I'll have a read of the android update tutorial but as I said earlier phones aren't really my thing. Then again I could always just have a quick tinker...

Mates with Hero's on orange have been on 2.1 for ages, mats on Tmob with hero's still running 1.5/1.6
