I'd have to do some reading up on the O2 network, but it's probably a new batch of SIM cards that they're sending out.

There have been 3 major updates to SIM cards in the last 10 years or so. I have an old Orange prepay SIM from when I worked there. It won't work in my current phones as it doesn't have the correct chip layout (architecture).
If O2 are in the process of updating their network, they might be releasing a new version of SIM card. Since your problems are only with the contract SIM's this is more than likely.

When you say they don't work, do you mean the phone still refuses to turn on, or just refuse to allow you to make calls (Unregistered SIM)?

        There are several SIM types:

Old 5 volt SIM's circa 1999 when these stopped.

Normal SIM's from 16K - 128K in size - Some older Sony Ericsson's do not support anything over a 32K SIM.

Then you have the USIM which is totally different internally to a normal SIM card. These are only for use on 3G compatible handsets - If you put one of these into a 2G handset it will not work at all.

WRONG a usim will work in some other phones i.e. they did work in old 6230i but when networks i.e. 3 find your are using it in a phone that is not 3g then they will block the imei from heir network bit of a sh1t thing to do but they do but yes there are various voltage type sims about

Very few 2G/2.5G handsets support a USIM - At random I popped a USIM into a LG KS-360 and it was rejected. I had a 6610i on my desk and this also rejects a USIM, being curious I tried a Samsung M620 plus a D900i and it was also rejected! I tried a few other 2G handsets and no joy, so I'd stand by my statement and say that they "may" work in some later Nokia 2G handsets but nothing much else!

Sadly the Rio isn't a full 3G handset. If O2 are sending out 3G SIM's on contract as standard, you might want to call them with a request.

This happened on Orange in the early part of 2000. Some phones refused to work correctly unless they had a specific SIM inserted.
If you call O2 & request an older revision SIM to be sent out, this should solve your problem. Now the person you talk to won't understand & will tell you it makes no difference as a SIM is a SIM.
You have enough information through trial & error to show that the contract SIM's are different to the prepay. They will then say they don't support the Rio as Orange are the only network offering this phone. This makes no difference, you are asking for an older revision SIM, escalate the call if needed. A supervisor will be able to raise the correct action to the tech support engineers that should see you recieve an older SIM.

One thing you might want to try is to find an O2 contract SIM from about 2 or more years ago that's still being used. Try this in your phone, if it works write down the SIM number.

                        8944 12 01

The first 4 digits show this is a UK SIM. The next 2 identify the network, in this case Orange. The next 2 digits show the Home Location Register (HLR) used for all call routing on that SIM.
Check the HLR on the working SIM to those that don't work. This is unlikely to give an answer as to why the phone refuses to turn on, but it may help if O2 are bringing new services via a new HLR with specific handset requirements.

Jeebers, my head hurts. It's been a long time since I've had to refer to this level of information.

yes i remember when i was working in the gsm industry flashing/unlocking/box breaking etc and i first came accross these problems with sim cards when the 8310 firt came out and it would work but could not read the contacts from it and the only solution was to go back to o2 and request a replacement card.

@ Jim going back to older handsets i cant remeber the software version on the 6230i but but say it was mcu 03.15 then you would need to flash it to say mcu 03.89 (latest) for it to work but then you could normally guarantee that 3 would text you within a month telling you to remove your sim and place it in a 3g compatible phone.

i did unlock a S5620 samsung and tried a 3 card and would work most of the time but would freeze other times to chosse wisely when wanting a nice new phone especially if your on the 3 network
