How to send messages between two mobile phones with no network signal

I am going on holiday and there is no network signal in the place we are staying. I want to send messages to my sons, who are staying very close to our accommodation, using our mobile phones.

Is there any way this can be done if there is no network signal? I have a router I could take away with me. I was thinking that both mobiles would 'see' the same wireless network, but beyond that I have no idea how to do this.

With Windows XP you can, I believe, send short messages to other PCs on the same network. I was wondering if you can do the same with mobiles - an Android and an Iphone.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts, guys!

if theres internet ya can send them online

or if ya unlock the phones before ya go
ya can buy a sim out there and put it in your phone and use it
will be a lot cheaper to
this is what i do when i go out foreign
just save your numbers to your phone

thats if theres signal for there networks where your staying

also is there signal outside the building if so could ya buy some booster and put it out the window to bring signal inside like a repeater
      like this http://cgi.ebay.ie/iPhone-GSM-Mobile...item2a0d7972f6

ya can probably get them cheaper if ya look around

We stayed at the place last year. There is no internet and no network access. Is there any mileage in taking a router and setting up a wireless network both phones can see?

What is the range of bump? Does it use the mobile phone network or bluetooth or what? Could I configure it to work over a wireless network by taking my own router? (This won't be connected to the internet)

No you cannot use a router.. Who's going to let you connect your router to their phone line... Sorry, but thats a stupid question.. if you've got no signal or wifi connection at all then use a walkie talkie or a piece of string and two cups... come on man, get real!

When you log onto a wireless network, each device is given a different IP address. Can't you use the IP addresses to send a message from one phone to the other - like VOIP?

Hmmm, Only way, and I very much doubt it will work...
My android I can use as a hot spot, for connecting a laptop or whatever... Set your phone as a hot spot and get the other to connect... I have no idea what it will do seeing as you have no signal, but an idea...
Other than that, smirnoff and the other guys idea of walkie talkies is the answer.
