The starter guide to satellite !

    The starter's guide to satellite!

Hey there guys, In the next few paragraph's of writing I'm going to be giving you a small starters guide to satellite, to help you get up and running with your satellite systems, and to help you acquire a little bit of knowledge before heading into a disaster by chucking your self in the deep end and letting your head hit the floor !

There are many different satellites in the sky, some you can not get in Europe, some you can, The one main one for the UK is 28.2East, This being the core satellite for sky UK subscribers and anyone outside of the UK who wants sky UK have to have a dish that would meet the requirements to be able to pick up this satellite, Now you are probably wondering, Why does my local pub have a MASSIVE dish that moves and gets football? This is what is known to be a Motorised Dish, The dish is a core part of your package, especially if you want football, Like a pub, Now the reason pubs receive 3O'Clock kick off's from the premier league and foreign channels is because the dish can move to receive foreign satellites and pick up the signals of 3O'Clock football that is LEGALLY shown on a foreign satellite where as the sky UK satellite do not have the rights to do so! ( Yet ), For more info on dish sizes, Take a look at jackpots guide HERE. The different satellites pick up different providers of television service, For example 13East has the Sky Itallian Service, 19East has the Sky German service, And so on so fourth. Satellites have all different providers on and multiple ones on the same satellite! For example Sky UK share 28 East with Sky Ireland and setanta. 28 east is where the satellite is positioned in the Sky, The foreign satellites are a-lot more crowded than the UK satellite. For example 13East has, Polsat, Cyfra, Sky Italy, JSC, Redlight, Rai and many more providers!

You can put your dish up yourself by buying the dish and self installing, witch I won't lie is hard, However you can get a professional in to do the job safely. On the other hand if your abit of a handy man and think your up to the task take a look HERE, This guide is for a motorised setup and it will benefit you A-lot to take a read. Motorised is probably the best setup, as for the extra cash you get a-Lot more channels and its more fun to have a big dish on your house, makes you look big compared to your neighbors virgin box aye ?

You are also going to need a Satellite receiver, There a wide range of Satellite receiver's out the now'a'day, From the Dreambox 500s to the VU+ DUO, Now there are A-Lot of different things people like about different box's, For a starter box I personally would recommend a Dreambox 500s, However at the moment word has it the best receiver out there is the VU+DUO, The big difference between these two bar the 500s is SD and the VU+DUO is HD is 350 pound, But if you have it to spend, why not ? Worth it! Another big difference is that the VU+Duo has two tuners. A dual tuner box means that you can watch 1 channel and record another at exactly the same time! Both the box's I Mentioned are linux, Meaning they run a linux operating system in side, it is these sort of box's you can connect to the internet on and transfer files from PC to box, etc.

Linux supports a numerous amount of stuff, Such as cams and Softcams, I'm not going to go into detail on that as that's a little bit for the pro!

These sort of boxes also support a thing called ' Card Sharing ' what we can not talk about on the forum much as it is frowned upon, For more information there I would just google it as talking about it here results in you being banned and your username going dusty.

Anyhow, This is my first ever help guide, so Don't give me too much stick for how bad it probably is!

Here's a good place to begin, this is where you can find the relevant info on the satellites, and also the corresponding channel details as well:

And here's a link for checking any satellites footprint:

    Regards, Ellis.

thanks for the guide ellis appreciate the effort you made with this.

personally i would appreciate a guide on what to do next. i have the 1 metre motorised already up. i have been using a protek9600ip box for the last 2 years but it has lost alot of the 3pm kickoffs now.

i got the protek becuase i have absolutely no knowledge of anything to do with setting up boxes, cams etc etc

but now i need a new box, im really stuck and dont know which one to get as none others seem plug and play like the protek?

i think this is a point alot of people get up to and get stuck on.....
