But how would he have sly (for instance) cos surely they'd have to install a dish for him to have a card in the first place. Or am I missing something obvious? It's been a long day!

To buy a card you don't need to have a dish. As far as I'm aware you just need to register the card to a UK address?

He can get a card from a mate who have sly installed and put the card into his card reader so no need for a dish if he doesn't want to watch sly.

You can get a card by just ringing them up...all they shall ask is if its plugged into phone line or not, then when card arrives, put it into digibox and ring sly up to pair the card to that box. Tell them you got a second hand box off ebay.
