can i use a normal sat dish ?

hi folks im totally new to the sat scene so please go easy on me, my dad has had free-sat installed and to be honest its crap it keeps freezing and it was a cheap set-up to start with, so i would say its probably the box, at this moment and time i dont know what box it is, now if i was to buy them another box could i hack it and use it on a normal sat dish its not 1 metre and its not motorised, i understand it maybe limited to what it can pick up, but anything extra to what he has standard would be a bonus and to be honest ironing out the freezing also, if this can be done what cheap box would you recommend.

buy a satellite tuner from ebay for about a fiver and make sure you are getting the best signal you can get and it should stop the freezing.
you will need to do a little research about the satellite receiver because they differ so much in what they can and cant do.
do you want to record?how many tuners?hd?

Deffo sounds like your dish is not correctly aligned..

FTA should not freeze...

As for "hacking"... You need to do a bit more research... Check out Dreambox's, Vu's or Technomates they'd be your best bet...
