Hi all. Top level pointers needed from n00b

Hi All

Just come out of contract with murdoch's SlyHD+
Been on various forums (digitalspy, techforums) but was told not to post this question. Fingers pointed this way to DK forums.

I would like to develop an understanding as to what the options are if I were to buy a DreamBox and patch this (appears to be highly recommended in several posts on this forum) as opposed to a FreeSat box from Currys for ?30.

What does a DreamBox give me when patched, in terms of channels, what equipment would I need, what's the pros/cons.

I have no idea what a DreamBox looks like never mind what it does, and I'm pretty uneducated on patching STBs but as a Software Engineer I should be able to follow links/guides and hopefully in time return something back to the forum.

welcome to dk m8, start by googling c/s or cardshare cant discuss this on here because of the nature of the beast s/w is available for this, and you will get help setting up the box here, but as for c/s servers, your on your own there, and you will get most channels this way, but its not simple, you will need to do a lot of reading.

But I thought this site provided all the patch files etc. Thats what i found in posts here. When you say it cannot be discussed, is that because of rules or something, cos there are lots of resources here.

we dont DISCUSS c/s, we dont discuss hacking cable/sly equipment, people may upload files that can be legitimately used for sharing an existing card to other receivers IN HOUSE, but that is ALL

m8, yes the files are here, but discussing it to any length is a no no, as i said the peeps here will help set ya box up, the biggest no no is the server part, that you will have to do your self. and once you have the "in house" thing you will be nearly there ( just DONT ask about pay servers )

(oh, manners - thank you for taking time to respond)...
Yeah, to clarify, I know nothing about this - period.
Am looking to LEARN about the options, methods and issues.
Am looking to start at the beginning and work upto - well wherever.
Used to "modding" - done PS3, Wii, countless Phones, and TVs. Never modded STBs.
Understand the legal implications of posting Sly stuff so fully appreciate your concerns.
Once I have some knowledge I will be okay
Just looking at where on earth to start.
As a SW engineer at a big defence company I hope to, in time, return the favour through whatever programmatic help I can.

ok, that link Shadyback refers to several STBs and several guides.
Which STB (and thus guide) is likely to suit me:
I have Sly+HD and been on contract for over 10yrs. Reckon I can purchase a box for a ?100 or so one off cost, upgrade f/w, install some S/W and watch TV. Not bothered about sport and movies (although would be nice) but like General HD UK channles, Documentaries, News, Music and Lifestyle)

A dreambox 500s is a good place to start easy to pick up for less than ?50 if you want HD theres a lot of linux boxes about some that run linux legally these are the most expensive then there are clones running linux cheaper and supposedely inferior a matter of con jecture that one most of the info is box specific so first decide which box to get then look in the relevant reciever section load the latest software and thats about it and come back for specific help if you get stuck and we all do at times

Just been reading some posts of cardsharing.ws , is that a good place?
Kind of getting the picture now (pardon the pun).
I need to get a box + card + image + S/W + server , and of course share mine. Am I right? Not sure how the server/client all works but no doubt I will pick it up.

1.The DM500s is HD? If not then what do you think of the Openbox S9 HD?
2.If sharing over the net, what is the up/down stream speeds required to get an sly+ comparable quality of picture?
3. Do servers tend to go offline/change and if so then would this need constant "fiddling" with the modded box?
4.Do I need motorised dish to receive the "usual channels" here in the UK - only I was thinking that if I maintain my sly subscription and share that, other channels would be over the net and not a satellite change , or is there a better way?
5. Do I need to put my slybox on eBay and buy 2xDM500s / 2xOpenboxS9 to do a local share in my home for Sly, or can I use the existing Slybox and buy 1 DM/Openbox ?

Decide on a box and decide if your bothered about hd.
Flash the box with image of choice,install bouquets and decide if your having static or motorised set up.
Hopefully when this is done someone might send you a nice pm to get the best out of your box.
Read the rules before you make any rash posts.

if you elect to read my request in concentration, you may have picked up on the primary purpose of the question was to specifically acquire assistance on recommended boxes / setup given my particular setup. appreciate your response but helpful directive responses contextualised to the question, would be preferable, thank you.

Yep, read that - many thanks.
However, I already have a sly dish up there on the wall,cabled up to the STB. My approach, and by all means interject if you feel there is a better way, was to do this by risk reduction -as in start with a working system and swap-out piece by piece. Thats my preferred way anyway. So,for example, 1st step would be static (already aligned) dish with S+HD box swapped out for another - but which one? To answer this, I posted the following questions above, for which I really could do with some guidance/response:

As I said, I'm a Software Engineer (CEng) and been around since the ZX80 days, I'm okay with software and modding, just need a pointer here and there?

Personally i think your asking far to many questions and you wont get the answers what you want.
People will help and guide you but no ones gonna spoon feed you everything.
We started the same way so get a box decide if you want hd and take it from there.
If its cheap try the Openbox but personally i would say buy the Dreamnbox 800hd for good all round support,
Also read the rules as we cant talk about servers on here.
