Don't you need a hd source I.e receiver or media player with a HDMI 1.4a output?

That only applies to 'proper' Full 3D sources, i.e 3D Blu-Ray. Not the the half res side by side watereddown 3D that broadcasters use, i.e two half res images squashed into a 1080 frame

It isn't bull. But HDMI 1.2/1.3/1.4 etc are a specification for hardware manufacturers and of no relevence to the consumer or HDMI cables. But HDMI cable manufacturers have adopted/used them for BS marketing purposes to con ill-informed/unsespecting consumers and anal retentive 'audio/videophile' types into buying expensive cables they dont need

Note there are different types of HDMI cable though, Standard, Standard with Ethernet, High Speed, and High Speed with Ethernet.

Standard cables are for reliable transmission of 720p/1080i (though most will also handle 1080p without issue) video + HD surrround sound

High Speed cables are for reliable transmission of video resolutions of 1080p upto 4K and 'proper' 3D + HD surround.

More info on HDMI cables >>> HDMI :: Consumers :: Buying Guide

But provided the cable meets the correct spec), there is no difference between a 99p cable and a ?100 one.

i would have said a big difference in cable if you do a long run quality and shielding has to make a difference, like having a litre of antifreeze in a car and other car has 3 litres, both will work but one may stop very soon.
