Linux or not ?

Hi lads,

Was asking on the Openbox forum regarding a UK supplier.

Been thinking though...I know you can do a lot more with a Linux box, but as I don't really want to turn it into the TARDIS would I be better sticking to non linux...Blade 7000 and the like.

I really want to explore sea lions and no more. Maybe a motorised dish and HDD eventually.

So my question is...why would a newbie be drawn toward the linux route ?

What REAL benefit are there except the enjoyment of a "twiddle"

Ive been on the Sat scene well over a year now and all i do is updated my bouquets bout once a month and that takes 2 mins so apart from set up theres not alot to do on a linux box.
Boxes are not plug and play but you will enjoy setting your box up and reaping the rewards.
Plus you might help others out once you have learnt the ropes

Why do many posters lead you to believe that setting up a linux box is rocket science ?.....

No offence to the linux devotees, but reading through the forums would tend to point the noobie towards non linux boxes for fear of bricking !

Ive never thought my Dreambox as a Linux box.
My sole intention was once the cable side died i would go down the sat route and Dreambox seemed the easy option.
If N3 ever gets cracked i would still stay in the sat scene theres so many more channels.
Hard to brick most boxes,granted flashing the wrong image dont help but most boxes are bullet proof and can be sorted and the clone boxes are of good standard.
Id hate to own a Starview or Kryptview
As for setting up a box with a few pointers it dont take more than 20 minutes.
You wont be sorry but get an hd box.

Actually, in comparison to a dedicated microOS linux is extremely unstable and resource hungry.

Thats also the only real advantage to a linux system - its vastly more configurable than any strictly closed source box. Users have a choice of sticking with pre-configured images (thus having to do little work themselves) or they can choose to 'tinker' and maybe get something closer to their ideal setup. Those more advanced can even write their own custom user-interfaces and programs.

Must admit though, i've always wondered why people buy such a programmable box and then never use it for more than basic functionality. Its a bit like buying an Iphone and then using it for nothing more than phonecalls !

the sensible people out there will not have any problems setting up a Linux based receiver as they tend to read first to find out what is needed. it's the " i want every thing now and i dont want to pay for my channels " brigade that have issues as they usually jump in head first without bothering to read any thing at all.

linux boxes are easy to configure once you have learnt how...
but linux boxes dont come with tutorials, so the only way is to learn from the forums or buy a manual from ebay,
once you know how you can configure your box in minutes
linux boxes gets the thumbs up from me

buy from ebay how dare you when all is givin free gratis here and in the box when you get it i'm led to believe there is a full set of instructions .. not that i've ever read it , all on HERE

yes you get instructions to operate it as fta,
it does not tell you how to configure cams etc
i had to find out everything myself and found it very frustrating but i got there eventually

That's what makes it fun, and you learn something. You feel good once you work it out.
