    Likely satellites

I'm new to all this, bit I've often told other than the only stupid question is the one that is not asked.

I'm looking at getting a TD88 motorised dish. Where I intend to put it only has a clear view of certain parts of the sky. My Sky dish is already on the same wall, but I could put the TD88 higher and more towards the front to increase the view.

What are the likely satellites I'll be looking for or more specifically the range of degrees/direction? I know there are loads of satellites but I am assuming that it will be limited by dish size and also scope of movement of the motor.

Hi. If i was you i would do what i did before i installed a motor to my dish. I looked for as many satellites that i could find from ground level with a small TV and receiver and dish in my hand. Make a list of the satellites you think you would like to get and tick them off your list when you find them. Remember, as already mentioned , the number of satellites you can pick up will depend on your dish size and clear path to the satellites. As you already have a SKY dish it should be easy to find the other satellites. You know that satellites are found from EAST to WEST positions so by moving your dish to the left you will be travelling to the EAST and by moving your dish to the right you are heading WEST. For example as you already have a SKY dish pointing at around 28 EAST if you want to find HOTBIRD at 13 EAST your dish will need to move to the right as you will be heading WEST. If you want to find HELLASAT at 39 EAST you need to move dish to the left to go EAST. So remember EAST - WEST , LEFT - RIGHT. This is the way a motor works, it moves the dish from left to right or right to left and stops at the satellite position when it finds it. Another thing to remember is when looking for satellites make sure you have an active transponder/frequency for that satellite either in your INSTALLATION SETUP or channel list. I admit it can take a long time to find all the satellites manually but you get to know how satellites work and will give you a better understanding when you have problems. I knew nothing about satellites until i started messing about and now i am an expert and understand how motors work etc. Also keep your personal safety in mind at all times when working with satellite equipment especially from heights. Let us know iy you require any further info. Regards.

use Satellite Finder / Dish Pointing Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com just put your address in and place the pointer where you want to install the dish. if you can hand hold a dish it will be a miracle.

Have a look at Satellite Finder / Dish Pointing Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com.

Enter your address, zoom into your property on the map, move the green marker to roughly where you intend mounting the dish, and choose the various satellites from the dropdown box. This will give you a rough idea of line of site.

There are also dishpointer iphone/android apps that are even better, uses gps/camera.

There are 'cracked' versions if you're that way inclined
