    Sky Card questions :)

    Hi,

I just bought a sky hd box from ebay (with no card) and had a few questions.

    1) The box was from someone in a different region so some bbc and itv channels are the wrong region, is there any way to change this to my region?

    2) Is it worth getting a white card from ebay to get the few extra channels, I don't want to go through the whole services route just to watch channel 5

    3) The sky news hd channel is on 501 (which doesn't work) any way to get sd sky news on 501 instead?

    THANKS

Hi there you can still get channel 5 on a skybox without a viewing card. You just add the channel manualy and then when you want to view it go to press services then other channels when you have saved it. The best the thing to do is put in channel five in a sky box without viewing card into the search of youtube and it will show how to do it. It will only take under a minute and then thats it.

I'd say yes it is worth getting a "Freesat from Sky" viewing card..

All Sky boxes revert to standard with no card inserted, It is the card that defines the region

        Not worth it

if you just bought this box for freesat channels you would have been better with a freesat box in the first place they can be had from some retailers from ?20

        THANKS

          Thanks for the replies.

Yeh I don't want to go through services every time I want to watch channel 5 though

Main reason I bought the box was family was familiar with all the channels numbers etc (plus with freesat think I'd have to do quite a bit of scanning to get international channels etc)

The box seems to have another region at the moment, will buying a "freesat from sky" fix this (can't I just reset the box somehow) and if I buy it from ebay do I have look out for certain cards (white and activated?) from a certain region (London?)

As already explained, Sky boxes are regionalised by the viewing card, so you can't change it/reset it, you need to insert a viewing card.

You'd need a current white card from the correct region.

The best way to ensure that, is to buy a FSFS directly from Sky (they're ?25)

buying from ebay isn't gonna guarantee you get the right region, or the card is still active.

as stated above , its the white card that is postcoded to your region , otherwise the box defaults to london region for the local channels , but you can add c5 freesat into OTHER CHANNELS as already mentioned , placing a white card from your region into it will postcode it , but even then the card will have to update for c5 or c5HD to work , so a combination of both. the same applies if you buy one from sky , and this will regionalise the box for your postcode , and update every few weeks or so too

so an active, working sky card for your region is what you need to make the sky box work , and I dont think sky sports news will work , but the sd version of sky news is free so just add it in if its not on a different number

ideally you should have bought a cheap technomate box or similar just for the free to air channels , and tuned it in like a freesat box , probably would have cost you between ?10 and ?20 for this , then you could have just organised the channels how you want them

so not as easy as you thought when buying it , but thats the way sky want it
