we cannot speak too much about sky on here but gift is for foreign satellites only do some reading on here and by the way foreign satellites do not mean foreign channels often a lot of them are very similair if not the same as sky and most times in english too
Hi everyone, thank you for your replies. I am the OP's dad and can type a bit better than him.
We already have a sky minidish on the house that is currently unused (left there by the previous owners). We are very interested in getting a satellite PVR system but do not want to pay a subscription. Frankly I think Murdoch is a bad man and I don't want him to get any of my hard earned cash! Otherwise I could afford the ?20 per month or whatever it is.
Given that we don't have a motorised dish, is there any advantage to us in getting one of these Spiderboxes with gift (i.e., do we get more channels)? Or should we just get the normal "freesat" package?

Any input would be welcome
If you only want FTA british channels then get a freesat PVR, they are easy to use and have a good EPG.

Pretty pointless getting a spiderbox as you will get none of the gift package without a motorized or monoblock set up,the spider does have other capabilities but we cant talk about it on here(google will help you) plus there are cheaper boxes about which also have this facility.Sorry if that sound a little cryptic but if you search around on here you'll know why.
What we definitely want is a PVR (pause live TV etc). I understand that you need to pay Sky for this feature even if you only use it on the free to air channels. I think they are honestly taking the p*ss asking for money just so I can use my own equipment! I know it's only ?10 a month but it doesn't sit right with me at all
Having said that, Sky boast that their "freesat" setup has more channels than the regular "freesat":
So, could I get as many channels as the Sky freesat thing by getting a different PVR? Any "extra gift" channels over and above this that are compatible with our box would be nice and yeah I wouldn't mind paying a few quid for premium channels.
