    Cs noob

Hi guys, first post so be kind ! ;-)
Looking fir my 1st SAT box, but finding the the learning curve very steep.
Loved the operation of my sky hd box...shame there's no way to,ahem reuse it...
Looked at openbox, but I gather they have reliability issues...so moved onto a Blade 7000, then read about Dreambox. Arrrrrhhggh
    Its all so overwhelming .

Basically want HD, and a record function that can be set from the epg.
An idiots guide to the entire process would cast nice too !

    Thanks for any advice....

Nice first post best thing to do is read the rules and do some reading.
Then do more reading and decide how much you want to pay.
If you want cheap Openbox ok but personally would spend a bit more and get a Dreambox 800hd.

    Andy.

Go for a Dreambox 800hd pro from China, you will get one for 120 quid delivered.
If you want to add a sata hdd im not sure how much they are but as you can see loads of support for the Dreambox, probably 10x more than the other boxes and easy to set up once you catch on.
A box can be done in 20 mins if you know what you're doing ans with help off here it will come easy.
No one going to spoon feed you though, bouquets need updating and boxes do crash so its best to get you're hands dirty and stay around and learn.

Forget Openbox if you want to set recording from EPG, Openbox recievers can only have a Now&Next epg on 28.2e satellites...

if you are looking a good box to watch and record tv go for a blade it is the best for someone just looking a replacement to a sky box dm800hd,s are head recking if you no nothing about them and you will waste alot of tv time trying to set it up

if you are looking to play with a box, learn about linux and get into the sat scene yes get a dm800 if you have not set one up before it will take a lot of learning before its set up correctly

the blade is set up in ten mins has a full 7 day epg stright from the menu and can be downloaded in 20 seconds and uses a hdmi cable not a dvi to hdmi so has a sharper picture i have both boxs and would like anyone to show me a dm800 clone with a better hd picture than a blade

go with what you need a box for, if its playing and learning get a dm they are hours of fun learning and playing, if its just for watching good old tv get a blade

nothing comes close to a sly plus HD box , as its dual tuner and you wont get one of those with HDD built in for your budget , and they have the best EPG too

vu+ duo seems to be a good one for substitution as its dual tuner , can have a hdd , but again its linux so a lot of learning to do (same with dreamboxes)

blade requires external usb HDD , you cannot fit one internally , or possibly stream to a NAS or pc ( not tried the latters ) , can also use a fat32 usb stick but obviously not much recording space , especially for HD channels

and then you have to factor in the cost of the subject you cannot talk about too , which will come ON TOP of the cost of your box and could easily double your budget

you deffo wont get the box and the wotsit for the channels for your budget

but you will get fta channels whichever box you buy

plenty of guides on here or use google , if you search for them , but you will have to do the work yourself and plenty of reading too , all been asked before many times so all you do is spend time on a proper lappy or pc doing the legwork and research

Dreambox arent that hard to set up.
Granted theres a few things that you need to understand but if you followed a guide on everything you need to do it will take you 20 mins to set up and that includes choice of image, network, bouquets and the thing we cant talk about
With some help they easy enough,
                  Now they are relatively cheap.

                    Andy,
hi andy dont take me the wrong way, i love my dm clone but for some peeople just lookin to play hd tv and get all the channels on they are a bit much and a blade is one of the most simple setup boxs i have come across so far

and the bit i think some find a bit daunting and very confussing is the different bootloaders and image mistakes that happen leading to, no ca faults ect thats my reason for asking what he wants a box to do play on or just watch tv

Don't mind "fiddling" but would rather have an easy solution..
I have done a little Linux stuff with a sat-nav forum I used to admin.
Also modded most consoles and many mobile phones...so not afraid of the soldering iron either, its just that I'd rather "get it done " than learn yet another black art !
Its OK folk saying "read up on the topic" but isn't thus what forums are for - to short circuit this learning curve ?

So far it looks like the blade is looking favorite ..
Thanks for input guys - keep it coming.

most forums already have the tutorials required to get the jobs done , but have more when it comes to linux

so no a forum isnt there to rattle off the same answer over and over again , its there to advise you on variables and then tell you to read the instruction manuals , or tutorials , or whatever kindly souls have placed on the forum for 24/7 access by the noobs who should read before typing , as generally speaking the same q is asked repeatedly until the answers are collated into tutorials for the masses to read , digest and implement

a forum is generally there to guide the person along the path once he or she has read what is required and is doing ir or has done it

and the linux boxes are a black art , whereas a blade can be done and dusted in 10 minutes flat , and then you learn about pvr or bladestream later

but there is always a learning curve , no matter how good you are , I am just trying a new box , and its a learning curve despite the hours I have put in on spider , dream , blade , technos etc
