    Rotor Longitude Setup

The satellite you use to set up your motor is determined by your location = longitude.

For anyone near the meridian line, i.e. 0 Degrees ( Greenwich, London ) the Thor sat at 1W would be the nearest sat to due south from that position.

The Satellites vary as you go East or West, my Dish is set up on 8W, because my location is Midlands Ireland,
so 8W is the nearest sat to my due south.

If you lived in Berlin Germany Hotbird 13E would be your sat at due south.

So google your co-ordinates & then look for a Satellite nearest to it.

Hope this makes it clear to all

I am sorry but I think you are mistaken your dish should be set up on 1.0W or the best reception you can get on BBC World 1.0W Thor.

Im just about getting my head round this sat arc stuff... but is that why your lat+long must be entered into the STB so that the motor knows where and what sats its pointing in between before moving

Lying in bed the other night I kept thinking if from here in belfast where my long is 5.9 and AtlanticBird 5 my nearest sat at 5W, then that would mean my dish/motor would have to spin EAST to go to a WEST sat.. is that right of is my due south co-ords messed up

Curious..i dont believe you! thats the first mistake you have made ..the due south sat is different in different places in the world..if you look on a atlas we in england are very close to the exact vertical middle of earth..that why our due south sat is 1west..0degrees is true south..then the more west you go the more the true south sat changes going up in west..so in america the los angeles the true south sat might be 97w..because if you think about it from america they couldnt recieve 1west due to the earths curvations..same with australia..they cant recieve 1west..its only 1west for up because we are very central on the planet.. So ireland is slightly more west so their true south sat will be 5or 8west..
And the strongest transponder on .8west is that new thor5 one..11785/28000..
The true south sat for your location will be the highest sat in the sky for you...

            NO

Think of it like the face of the clock no matter where on earth you live due south is 12 o'clock. Where you are 12 o'clock=5.9w so as the rotor starts moving clock wise its going from 5.9W to 10W 15W & so on.

When it goes anti clock wise its going 5.9W to 0E 10E 15E & so on

My apologies guess my geogpraphy is crap and you are right. I looked at his location and thought Midlands, England. I didn't even know there was a Midlands in Ireland.

I think Ive got it, I was thinking you always had to aim for the middle of the arc at 0deg as your highest point so that all the sat co-ords would make sense

I also thought different countries and such all had their own 1W and 5W and so on and we were all just talking the european co-ords.... turns out its just one big list of unique co-ords for each sat worldwide... so in america they would have something like 115W-150W as their main sats and no EAST "E" sats(I thought that what is 120W to us would be like 4E to them over there)... Im I thinking right so far?

Thats what was confusing me I thought you had to have a list of E=EAST sats and W=WEST sats on your arc for the motor to work out where its to spin to..... was what I meant when I was saying AtlanticBird 5W was to the EAST of me 1deg and couldnt work out how the motor was going to go EAST 1deg to a "W" sat

Good info, Id have been stuck on that one for a while if it wasnt for this thread

                  Then you will love this.
When your looking at it imagine that your looking at the North Pole from above.

The nail has been hit serverely on the head with that pic... I forgot all about the 2 180deg planes that make up East and West..
                    so its 180W-0-180E

Nice one man.. Im saving that pic for future ref
