    Wife friendly setup

    Hi,

New member here hoping to ditch Virgin and set up a satellite box.

Only problem is it has to be wife friendly, and my other half won't even use my harmony remote.

So I'm looking for a twin tuner, with series link like capability that can record to a NAS, a decent EPG and time shifting. The best option seems to be the Vu+ Duo although it's a little pricier than I was looking for. Would that do all of the above? Is it fairly user friendly once set up? Can any of these boxes get Iplayer or 4OD?

I was also thinking of maybe two dreambox clones. I don't suppose it's possible to set these up in such a way as to emulate a twin tuner? If not, does anyone know if say a DM500 and DM800 use different IR codes so a macro could be set up on a harmony remote without duplicating actions on both boxes?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Dan

Don't think any receivers do series link and 4od.
Unless you stick with virgin that is.

Just googled it and there is a plugin called cross epg. Basically a timer so if program time changed, well you'd miss it.

I don't think there could be a satellite setup in the world that would be harder than getting shot of the Mrs, so looks like I'm stuck trying to please her.

I'd looked into cross EPG. Hadn't thought about rescheduled programs though. I'd imagine that'd be a minor annoyance. Are the availability of plugins like that pretty standard across Enigma 2 boxes or do they depend on what hardware you have?

Can the Vu+ do all of the other things I mentioned?

THe ET9000 and VU duo defo do series link. I am using the ViX image on my ET 9000 (twin tuner) and I was really conscious that the wife had to be able to use it.. Guess what - she can, and finds it no problem....

It doesnt do 4 o.d. as yet though, and not sure it ever would, but it is better for me than my Sly + box!!

It works really easy with my NAS, it picks it up str8 away, and records to it, and plays films from it.

You can integrate series link on any image and any box just download the Autotimer plugin this will take care of the Series Link side of things

In my opinion, your not going to get anything as good as the official stuff. VU is as close as your going to get, but even that isnt as easy to use as say a sky plus hd box, and wont offer some of the stuff that sky offer.

for me the downside of using a third party receiver is that the enigma2 software just isnt good enough even though its the best we have.

I agree with that statement, and I have had satellite boxes for many years, none of them are "wife friendly" so do not believe the hype !

I agree that some are fairly straightforward to operate but nothing is as good as the official boxes for simplicity and ease of use, and age doesnt come into it either as I have seen "girl" ages ranging from 8 to 80 operating sly plus with no problems at all !

so although the vu+ or clarketech silver boxes may come close to operational aspects of the plus boxes, the ease by which a sly plus operates is something we all have aspirations towards achieving with our dreamboxes or spiderboxes or blades
