    Sky Virgin

    Hi guys, first post.

As the name suggest I've just signed up to Sky with Sky+. Instalation Thursday coming. I'm not especially interested in Sky as such I was more interested in FreeSat but it was a good deal so I thought I'd let them do the work and jump ship after the contract period was up.

Since then I realized that I'm a Sky Virgin as items are popping up all over the place that I was unaware of. Recording facility cancelled on Sky+ when you leave, and things like that.

What does get me though, and this is the reason for posting, is the telephone line. I've just learned that I will have to leave it plugged into my box for 12 months - is that correct.

Now I'm 60 and my 80+ mother lives with me so neither of us are likely to go for interactive tv. My master phone socket is at least 30 feet and two rooms away. Do I really need to have the line installed. If I decide against having the line installed will the just cancell the instalation and will I be charged

I live in Northern Ireland and to be honest my main reason for going Sky was that I want to be able to receive broadcasts from the Republic of Ireland and I can't pick it up via aerial (RTE 1, RTE 2, TnaG) and they don't appear to be on FreeSat at the moment. Though I do hear that Sky and the Irish Broadcasting Service (RTE) are falling out.

    Many thanks for any help

I'm assuming Sky have some form of policy for dealing with disabled people that been the case I've fired off this email to them

I need clarificatio on the issue of telephone lines.

I am due to be connected to Sky this coming week. I have since learned that there is a requirement that I keep a telephone line connected to my sky+ box for 12 months. The sky rep with whom I singed up did not mention this issue.

I am 60 years old, I live with my mother she is 87 years old, we are both registered as disabled. Our master telephone socket is at least 30 feet from where the television will be. We only have the one socket. It could be dangerous for us to have additional wires. Do I have to keep a telephone line plugged in for twelve months - we won't be using interactive TV.

This is a major issue for us. Can you waive that requirement. I would have to seriously think about wheter or not to continue if you insist in a having the telephone connected.

Pardon if I've not explaining myself correctly
It will be interesting to see thier reply.

        hi m8..
just ask for a non phone line installation,it will cost you 25quid extra thats all, instead of the engineer pairing the card to the box through the phone line he will have to ring sly to manually initialise the card..thats why they charge the 25 quid to mi the card...non phone line option is available on all sly packages std sly plus and hd..you cannot however have non phone line if ur having multiroom, this is to stop people putting 1 of their boxes in another property....hope this helps

          Hi m8..
I did get sky installed and they let me keep my virgin telephone line.. and yes i agree with terriers about the engineer having to pair the card to the box as that is what the chap who came to install told me as well

I'm surprised that Sky have not responded to my email yet. Will fire them off a reminder today about 16.15 just to remind them.

            Kevin

ps I know you can give them 25 notes and they'll not worry about the telephone line but I like getting something for nothing from big multi-nationals - it's more of a game

I had sky installed sometime ago and the installer had to connect the phone but couple of hours later i unpluged it, nothing happened until one nite i wanted to watch a film on box office and it needed to be connected to phone line in order to charge my account, i then unplugged it again. I have now seen the light and gone vm for free so no longer have a package from sky but use it a spare freesat box in another room.

Here's the reply, received tonight 8.45

Thank you for your email regarding the phone line connection.

I can confirm that if you wish to install the Sky digital equipment and not connect to the telephone line, you will not be able to receive any subscription or multiroom offer.

However, there is an enablement fee of 25.00 (GBP) to be paid up front over the phone and is non-refundable should you wish to connect a phone line post-installation.
If the installation is non-standard, because it requires additional cabling, bracketry, other equipment or work, then extra charges will apply. This can only be determined when the engineer visits. If additional work or equipment is required, the engineer will advise you prior to the installation proceeding.
For further information please contact our Sales team on 08442 41 42 43 where one of our Sales Representative's will be happy to assist.

If Im reading the message correctly it seems to suggest that I can install without connecting to the phone line BUT it would appear that I'd have to pay the full amount for the box and installation and only receive non-subscription programs...sky "
you will not be able to receive any subscription or multiroom offer"...am I reading it correctly.

It doesn't seem to suggest that you can pay ?25 up front and ignore the telephone.

                Kevn
