    Newbie - Need some suggestions.

    Hi members of Digital Kaos!

I'm interested in getting an open source sat box. I've got a s*y box but it doesn't work anymore, so I've got a satellite cable in my room which I'm hoping I can use with an open source sat box.

    My basic needs are:

    - Something under ?50
    - able to watch free view channels from $ky (I would also like to be able to watch paid channels)
    - have the ability to customize
    - compatible with my sky dish
    - High Def channels (not very important)

I did some research and it seems like the dm500 suits most of my needs.

You have a couple of choices either the Dm500s or the Openbox but nothing is free in this world.
Both will act as a freeview box but both are capable of alot more.

The other capibilities we cant talk about openly on this forum but we can help you flash the box and get it set up and running.
If you google card sharing that will point you in the right direction but on this site the subject is banned,

        Andy.

          Ah... I see.

Okay then which box would be recommended for me? Which e-tailer is the best? Is it cheaper getting it from China or the UK?

          Cheers

If you go down the Dreambox 500s which is well supported i would buy from the Uk as they are cheap enough to buy and no great saving to make.
Alot use this as a good starter box then move to the Dreambox800hd which is a better box and has hd.
This can be bought from China for just over 100 quid,

but an openbox is not an open source box ! which he did ask for in his opening post

therefore he is looking at a dm500s SD box for the money , or something similar like the blade version or the technomate version (similar boxes to the dm500s, not any of their other products)

for the budget involved there is limited scope so the dm500s is the best solution for the price

                    Right cheers guys.

I might just go with the dm500s and start small then go onto bigger things.

                    Thanks everyone!
