    hi everyone..
just letting you all know about a little cheat if you have a spare sly plus box..if you ring sly and tell them your card is damaged ie your kid has pulled it out and snapped it.
they will send you a new card at the cost of a tenner, and they only switch off the premium chanels on the old card,BUT STILL leave the recording function active.so you can put the old card in a second box and use it as a FREEVIEW RECORDER,,.RECORDS ch4 and 5now as well...mines been doing this now for 12months"
Can I develop this. As I understand RTE comes as standard in both parts of Ireland: The Republic and The North. However, there are some restrictions e.g some of the sport from the republic is blocked and does not appear on the RTE stations broadcased into Northern Ireland

What if I were to get a friend in the Republic to report their Sky+ card damaged, pay for the new card and obtain his old card. Could I use it in the North of Ireland.

My assumption is this: RTE in Ireland (North and South) is not a premium channel, in the sense that you do not have to pay for it, it comes as standard with the bundle. So if I were to install a cancelled Republic of Ireland card in my box would I continue to get what are free to view channels in the Republic? If that were the case I could, for example, do a switch when a football matched was been broadcast in the Republic but blocked in the North

Pardon if I seem to be asking silly questions but my Sky+ box is only been installed today so I'm just getting to know the beast.

yes in theory it should work!...but when you are changing the cards round power the box down first, then power back up and the chanels for the card youve just put in will show on epg.
    same again when swapping back...

I think with using a different Sky card in another receiver you must first paire the card & receiver especially if both cards hold different packages for example movies and sports or in this case Republic of Ireland card holds different information than the Northern Ireland Sky Subscription card.

For this to work you will have to go into the Tech-Rep menu on your receiver and go to reinstall or reactivate the card so it pares the card and the receiver, if you dont all you will get is the basic channel package for your area you will not open RTE or Premium channels i also think you require a telephone connection to do this.

You have got to pare the card and the receiver and if you are returning the card back to its original receiver in the future you will have to follow the same method.

It would be easer to swop the entire receiver & card with someone who has the same package and subscription, of course with someone you trust.

if you in the north and its just rte your after then why do you not just put an airel up most places can get it with one also if he is your friend tell him to add another receiver to his house and you pay for it as i have got a friend in england about three receivers from the south this way and they have satanta ireland on them all so they can get the 3 o clock kick of

            I'm not a happy bunny! Sky called today to install me the young chap took a look around;

"Sorry mate you'll not get a picture here"

            "What?" says I.

"Those tress," he said, pointing to three large trees in my back garden, "they'll block the signal." Of he goes to check out the view.

"No you'll not get a signal, the trees are to tall; the signal would be a disaster especial when the leaves are on them. You'd have to top them."

"Em!" Says I. "No way am I'm going to top three mature trees just to receive television pictures," says I after about two seconds of thought.

"Can I use your telephone?" says he "I need to ring Sky." You could tell he wasn't into all things green; it was the end of the day and he had to go on a long journey so Sky could do a stock take. To be honest I think he was glad.

"No bother," says I. "It's in the hall."

He speaks to his boss explains the situation. Boss asks to speak to me, says sorry but if I ever do decided to top the trees come back to him. They'll issue me a full refund within 48 hours (it came of my credit card)

So there I am, all geared up for Sky. Looking forward to seeing RTE in all its glory, and seeing my mother catch up on the RTE soaps. Looking forward to seeing the odd decent film and maybe a bit more garden. Just looks like I'm going to have to get my aerials upgraded and wait until Freeview put out a strong enough signal to cover my area.

Still think of the money I've saved
