Sky HD Remote loosing strength!

My Uncles Sky remote only now works close up to Sky box.
He is confined to his armchair and cannot get up closer to the box.
He is on his third box for this same problem. Initially everything is fine, then after a few months the Sky box does not respond unless the remote is close up. Not a battery problem!
The last engineer call resulted in some engineer's reset rather than a new Sky box. Any clues guys?

Could be a simple case of cleaning the receiver IR and transmitter IR 'plastic' covers. Failing that a new remote can be had off ebay or direct from serveral on line shops fairly cheaply
