I would load the catseye channel list, connect to the lnb, and go through the sats on fta channels until you find out which one it is on

if it was on 28.2e than bbc1HD would clear

if it was on 19e than ZDF would clear

so as each sat has unique channels its easy enough to work out what sat you are on

i dont have your type of box but make sure you have entered your friends correct long/latitude setting so motor can move to the desired sat.

As andymc1s pointed out you only need to load a channel list on the box and the go to Tuner Config set to Simple - Positioner and enter your mates Lon and Lat details save and choose a channel on any satellite, The dish should move to the selected satellite and channel you chose if you have no signal then his previous install could have been setup on Diseqc 1.2.

Which means you will have to follow the same procedure but choose Advanced Diseqc 1.2 and manually search and store the satellites.

That is of course if your friends 1.2m dish is actually mounted on a Diseqc motor and not a 36v one.
