    Flash kernal first ?

I am about to flash a brand new VU+ Ultimo with the latest VIX image but I have read that I need to flash the kernal first and I have also read that I may need to update the bootloader . Any help on how I do this please ?

You can pretty much flash the image straight away by USB as usual, if you have not already done so you may want to Update the FPGA upgrade before flashing any new image, if you currently run Vix on your ultimo i am not too sure if they include it in the plugins menu,It is available in the Blackhole images from the plugin menu but can be downloaded and flashed via USB also.

I have never flashed an image to it as it is brand new . it has had the FPGA 4.5 update and has the original VU image on it .

you need to get your thread moved to the correct section, the VU section and seek answers in there from owners of the same or similar products
