Beyond Dish Size is the material ( brand )important ?

Greetings from Madrid where I hope once 2F is launched to be able to get the UK beam , freesat but also i hope a Sky package. I have done some research on the reciever and will probably get a vu+ duo ( though I have niggling doubts from some reports on the tuner sensitivity ) .

Anyway i guess im going to be " fringe " on this beam ( if im lucky given advances in beam shaping ) so im now looking at other items and next on the list is the dish itself. There seems to be a wide spectrum of dish price at a given size and one installer is telling me his ware is " hi gain " ,, Im a former radio amateur and to be gain comes from design first and to a lesser extent steel / aluminium and coatings but ,, my ham days are well behind me.

Does material & Brand play a big role in my chances of capturing a weak TP ? To my mind I should be focused on getting.

    1. A good tuner
    2. Reducing loss in the cable .. its gonna be a 50 meter run ( yikes )
    3. A good LNB
    4. Dish Size ( thinking 1.4 - 1.8 meter )

Any thoughts from you pros who chase weak birds especially would be most welcomed.

get the best equipment you can afford... a 1.8m channel master/andrew dish is the best still available but very expensive. if you have a very long run the wf100/wf125 should be used. as for the reception you really need to seek advise from local installers/people who already have a system to see what they use for reception. as with anything in life you pay for quality... eg.. a jonsa/fortec star and andrew dish of 1.8m are the same size but the andrew will beat the jonsa hands down. regards mdt

Thanks Andrew , my research is initial at this moment as nobody knows what size dish is required here at the moment, before Freesat etc moved to Astra 1n it was a 1.4 and im assuming a 1.4 or 1.8 covers the bases for when 2F lights up .. I was able to eliminate a few of the local cowboys who told me to get a 1 meter dish and omitted to tell me of the upcoming move from 1n european beam.. Would have happily sold me a 1 meter dishing knowing its not likely it will pull in 2Fs uk beam ( though nobody really knows ..hopefully it wont be long now before it goes live ).

Is the brand " GIBERTINI " any use ?

Your comment reference the wf125 is also noted , i was reading about it last night also. Once again thank you.

yes gibertini is a very good dish maker , and they do a 1.5m dish , a lot of people swear by them ,i dont think you will go wrong with purchasing one provided its big enough for your requirements

Until 2F is actually launched and so far the launch date has been postponed by a few days and it goes into service no one knows what the beam coverage will be like.

Rumours are it will be similar to 2A/B so europe should be OK, as we all know 1N was just a temporary stop gap which is meant for the german DTH market at 19.2? east.

My advice dont buy anything as yet until reports come in from a round your area

Yes Digicon, I have it fairly clear now to wait untill there are coverage reports for the new UK beam , at this point Im trying to avoid the " noobies tax " by learning what I can about the hobby and planning a system though Im waiting and hoping that a 1.5 meter dish will be good enough on the fringe of this beam.
