is it possible to have sat tv without ethernet (internet connection)

my friend wants to get either a openbox or vu duo depending on wether they want to be able to record
but the question i like to ask is
can either of these boxs work without a ethernet cable in them (internet connection) and still received 28.2e (all sly channels)
i will be able to sort a c line for this box if its possible
another way was can these boxs use a 3G dongle if they need internet connection or is 3g too weak

hope you can clearer up these questions

Without a network connection the box wont be able to connect to a card share server (the cline is basically your account logon details to the server) so without this connection the box will not be able to unscramble subscription channels, it will only be possible to watch Free to Air channels.. You could use a 3G dongle, but that would have to be in a 3G router, the sat box would then plug into the 3G router with an ethernet cable.

You can get channels that work on keys. PLTV @ 10east is a good example of that.

Nope, because the box wouldnt know what the dongle is as it requires software (drivers) to use it, and with Openbox receivers you cant install drivers for different usb devices...

Openbox s9, s10, s11, s12 are only capable of using storage devices via USB... Skybox F3 and M3 are also capable of using a specific type of Wifi dongle in the usb port, because the software to use it is programmed into the box..

You can do a lot more with open source linux boxes, but Ive no idea if people have gotten 3g dongles working on them...

you can also use a tenda or vonets wireless bridge or similar.. it still requires an ethernet cable to connect to box, but then network is wireless. why cant he just plug it into router?

No matey ... you can manually add keys that will open certain channels .. they can last for several weeks before they are changed

No worry's just reiterating what mdt was saying back in the day it was all season interfaces, programmers and MOSC's where the order of the day and using a bit of the Grey Matter, sadly missing now with the advent of CS and most just want it spoon fed.
