    Tenerife Sky cards being seized

The police are currently in Las americas seizing sky cards from bars, they are accompanied by men from Canal+. Last week this was happening in mainland europe. From what I understand the use of Sky outside the UK is not permitted and the majority of the cards are registered in the UK.

This has poped up before ! For years Sky looked the other way as long as they received the subscription they did not realy care where you were living, and as far away you traveled for your summer Holidays (Southeren Turkey or the Red Sea for example) every Bar street had at least a handfull of bars with Sky Digital.

Since the EU made a decission ruling to open the market for satellite providers (meaning that anybody can buy a subscription from anywhere across Europe) which is due to come into effect later this year or next year, Providers have started doing the opposite and are actualy clamping down on cross border use of there services.

The only theory I can come up with for this one is, there trying to clear out the Home domestic cards issued to people outside the UK & Ireland, and later issue special cards and subscription costs when the EU ruling come into effect which seems plausible if Canal+ are also following and doing the same, It strange how the are all willing to through away so much revenue coming in from expats abroad.

I wonder if this effects websites selling subscription online or is it only direct subscribers to Sky & others are been switched off in this fashion once detected ?

The law on Free movement of goods within the EU already exists, the recent judgment was just a confirmation that it applied to Satellite providers as well as other businesses - it's just a contractual issue which should be a civil not a criminal matter
