Hi. Anyone got any thoughts on a DIY STB with Dual Tuner DVB-S2 card and running Linux. I'm talking about maybe using an old PC as Satellite receiver and running Linux. Once it has HDMI output then would be good enough for me.

Great idea but for a decent dual tuner PC sat card something like the TBS range which are highly regarded your looking at around ?166 just for the card alone then cost in a new graphics card with HDMI and well lets just say its cheaper to buy a receiver

I've seen this card:
TBS6981 PCI-E DVB S2 HD Dual Tuner Card
for about ?85
Maybe don't even need HDMI. TV has VGA input and audio inputs....already have an old old PC.
Granted running it would probably be more costly to run but could clock it down to a reasonable level to save power....could probably do it for less than the cost of a VU+. An it would be very upgradable...worth thinking about.
Anyone know where could get more info on putting something like this together?Comment

If you can build a PC from scratch then you can build a HTPC with integrated Satellite Card, When i did mine i bought DVBViewer pro at the time for a cost of around ?15 which seemed to be one of the better ones available.

Wont it be a pain having to control your satellite TV with a keyboard and mouse all the time, unless you're also going to buy an IR Remote Control kit for this PC.. ?
You really would be better off building a proper HTPC, or just using a proper sat receiver...Last edited by nibblitz; 13 October, 2012, 17:33.Comment
