    XBMC on sat box?

    Hi All

I recently installed XBMC on Apple TV 2 and think it's a great piece of software. I saw recently that the Prism Cube sat receiver will incorporate this when released. Was just wondering are any other current boxes that can run XBMC as well as receive sat channels too?

I already have ATV2 with XBMC installed and have Raspberry Pi arriving tomorrow to tinker with too. Hopefully get XBMC running on that also. Prices of second hand ATV2 have went through the roof so will be a cheaper alternative.

Ah no, thats why I was offering it as an alternative, as so far it cant be done on a sat box AFAIK.

Although you can plug a usb tuner to a PC setup, so if the expert mind was there the Pi could be used in conjunction with another setup as it can be used a an OScamserver and receiving satellite pictures

I think the Pi doesn't have the processing power for a tuner, it is pretty pitiful.

I can't think of any real reason why it couldn't be compiled for a Dreambox or similar but it's a lot of work and probably not worth the effort.

If you are thinking of sticking XBMC on a Pi the OpenElec one seems to me to be smoother on playback than the Raspbmc.

No not on its on, but has the ability in conjunction with others. Not ideal but possible.

Cheers, I have that and the raspbmc ready to try and see how they compare.

I'm gonna try installing OPENELEC version on my RPi later. I also bought a wireless dongle for it. I'm hoping to use an old USB receiver/media centre remote with it too. Be interesting to see how it compares with the ATV2 version which im now using more than i use my sat box due to the amount of films and series available through it.

Just a quick update if anyone is interested. I installed Openelec on my RPi SD card and it worked straight away and i was able to use my old XP media centre receiver and remote to control it. Its seems to run a bit slower that on the ATV2, takes longer to buffer and navigate menus etc. Also, when i tried to fast forward the audio and video went out of sync and i had to reboot. However, i'll mess around with it over the next week and see if i can tweak it a bit and get it onto my wireless to see how playback is.

not sure on openlec but with raspbmc if you get the downloader and install as normal on to sd.

insert a decent usb stick and the sd card to the Pi.

Now follow instructions on screen and it will prompt to install to usb.

Now you need to keep both in all the time but menus and all round speed is improved.

                      Worth a try to compare.

Good advice reading around a few forums myself before i tried mine i was told to use at least a Class 10 sd card as a minimum, so i swapped my class 4 for a class 10 and speed was noticeable from the off.
