    Openbox / Skybox / Cryptobox

    Hi Guys,

    Please could somebody help me!

I need a box to meet the following requirements:

    1080 HD
    USB for PVR
    Good EPG List
Ability to connect to laptop to watch films (if possible)

I am stuck between those boxes mentioned in the subject, but there is so many models of each, I have no idea which is the best!

    Please could somebody advise?

I've looked at the Open box S9 / x3 / s16 Skybox f3 (i believe this is a renamed s9) and the cryptobox 400 and 450hd but no wiser what to go for!

    Thanks!

I dont see any of those having a good epg list

a good epg is mainly a linux based box like the dream or vu

but the blade BM7000S or the Technomate 5402 HD would do the jobs you ask about

or use any dreambox or vu, especially if you wish to stream TO a laptop (and not from a laptop)

      Hi Ramjet,

I don't want to pay over ?100 and don't need the additional features of the Technomate's/Dreamboxes

This is mainly for HD TV..

Can I set a path on the Skybox f3 to point to a network share on my laptop to watch movies?

your limited budget is of no concern to me, I was addressing the points being raised , especially if you wanted to stream tv TO your laptop or to do other things that only a dearer box can achieve, which also includes epg issues (most boxes are mainly now and next)

I know the blade can stream movies FROM a laptop, using bladestream, the spiderbox does a similar trick using homestream , and dreamboxes and vu boxes can stream to and from a nas or a laptop or pc

I have no idea what a skybox can do or not do as I dont own one and never have done, so I suggest you ask in the openbox forum if nobody replies

if you cannot afford a supercar, then dont expect supercar performance

          Thanks for your replies.

Regarding your sarcastic 'supercar' comment, I can fully afford a top of the range box, but I wouldn't use any of it's features, so what's the point!

And being able to find a network path hardly puts it in the 'supercar' category!

too often you find people want a cheap ?50 box to do the same as one costing 5 to 10 times the price, you see many ex-cable users asking questions about basic skyboxes and openboxes as they migrate to satellite, little knowing what it all entails

your sarcasm about budget was typical of the above, so makes me wonder why people ask for features not possible on cheap boxes

you buy cheap , you buy twice

my advice is to UP your budget and get something that does the job properly , epg and streaming included , as in the future you always tend to find you want something that wasnt on the original shopping list, and I class a skybox/openbox as the "trabant" of the sat box world and will always do so, so I would say "buy a mondeo instead"

sometimes the point of sarcasm jolts the prospective purchaser to buy the correct products for their requirements , or to not have those features

on location, location its called compromise , the c word , unless you can afford what you really require, in which case my experience says "buy it"

the lack of answers apart from my own indicates your requirements exceed your budget, and my answers listed those that will do as you ask
