the exe file is the loader tool so run that on your pc
then choose the recovery bin file to load the box with, turning the box on after starting the download process

the correct method of loading the tool is to double click it using windows explorer (file explorer)

the correct name of the exe file is rs232 tools.exe for the 5000 spiderbox

I have no idea which guide you are referring to, but a guide is exactly that, a guide , not necessarily a "dummies tutorial"

after you posted I found the rs232 tool for the sd5000 spiderbox and it says rs232 tools.exe so clearly that is the name you run, or simply double click it

then you need to locate and use the bin file for your receiver , which is something else you need to locate and download and possibly unpack

once this has all been done and the correct com port selected, start the downloading process and then switch the box on at the mains

other than that, you will have to wait for a better guide, or wait for somebody who has done this process on a 5000 to give you better guidance

no , you need the rs232 tool for the 5000 which is called rs232 tools.exe (the 7000 and 9000 tool is called download.exe)

when it says RUN it really means double click the loader tool, then you load the file which could be a bin file (the 7000 and 9000 are)

I couldnt locate a 5000 bin file either ! I have also never reloaded a 5000 so same as you on that score

as for the tutorial, I have amended it slightly and pasted it below

                1. Switch off STB
                2. Run download.exe on PC (usually by double clicking the exe in windows explorer) , or rs232 tools.exe on 5000
                3. Select COM port and Press connect button
                4. Press "Choose file" and select the attached spider_rs232.bin for your particular model
                5. Switch on STB
                6. you will see the progress status on PC
                7. STB will auto-reboot after finishing the downloading.

make sure you have no leads in the box at all apart from the null modem lead (make sure it definitely is a crossover null modem lead too)
so no lnb coax cable, and although you could have a scart I wouldnt bother at this stage with any other leads or cables
also make sure you use a proper pc with built in com port and using xp as the os, so no usb adapters at all
