Pointing a dish with no South facing wall.

Hi, I've been lurking for a while reading up on what to do and what I need to get started.
My first problem is where to mount my dish. I wanted a motorised setup but I don't think I have anywhere suitable to mount one.

The first photo shows the gable end of my house pointing North(ish). I've marked 2 red lines where I think I could mount a dish. 1 is on the East facing wall of the house, the other the kitchen extension wall. It looks to me like there is no point getting a motorised dish as it would need to be 40 foot in the air to clear the house to the west. I think I will be ok with a basic fixed sky type dish and just make do with that.

Have I got this right?

as you have an east facing rear wall you could mount fixed or motorised dish or dishes at the back and sweep over your rear garden

you can probably "see" from say 42e to possibly 0.8w , so as you say ignore anything past 0.8w as its the east sats you really want to access

you could use a fixed sly dish on 28e and a motorised 80cm to 110cm dish if you wanted to, and those mounting points seem ok to me

a relative of mine has a fixed sly dish and motorised dish sweeping the same limits so seems to me you have the same east facing wall that he does

I would check 0.8w in dishpointer , and check 5e , 13e , 19e , 28e and 39e too while you are at it, assuming you get these , especially the latter ones you are good to go

as for the west, you could fit a dish on the front of the house pointing at 30w but I wouldnt bother for now, just stick to 5e to 42e or thereabouts

so maybe an 88cm dish, inverto ultrablack lnb , and darkmotor , also a cheap fixed zone 1 or zone 2 sly dish with quad lnb on it

I should have said I want one or the other not both. First choice is a motorised dish but if that wont work I would settle for a fixed dish.

A motorised dish it is. I was going to go for a 1m dish, will an 88cm one do? Does the fact that I'll only be hitting the East ones mean I'll get away with a smaller dish?
I'm in Scotland btw. East Central.

the rule with dish sizes is simple , - the bigger the better, and as you are in scotland - the bigger the better !

you havent actually said what the range is according to dish pointer , but let us assume you can get from 13e through to 42e , you will get the main sats

anything else like 10e , 7e , 5e , 0.8w is a bonus, all down to how far south you can point the dish without having obstruction issues from your house or your neighbours house or houses, or trees or walls or chimeys etc

so its imperative you check the range on dishpointer before spending any cash

I would go for a 1 metre dish , inverto ultra black lnb (single or twin or quad - mine is a twin inverto) and darkmotor (or a tm 2600 motor)

you would then have something similar to mine, and be able to pickup any satellite in your range of view, which are those eastern satellites

the main ones being 13e , 19e , 28e and 39e (lesser ones are 0.8w , 5e , 7e , 9e , 10e , 16e , 23.5e , 26e , 42e)

you could just use a fixed dish with multi lnb system on the first three above, possibly a 4th sat could be available depending on installation and use a diseqc 4 way switch instead of a motorised system

Going by dishpointer I think I'll be able to hit everything East and maybe 0.8w at a push.

Was looking at this deal (and upgrading to the Ultra LNB as you advise). Also T&K brackets so I can rais ethe dish if needed.

what about your back garden you could concrete a pole into the ground and fix your dish on it as long as you have line of site

I could but I have a 3 year old who would shinny up it and be dangling of the arm 5 minutes after it was planted!

I'd prefer it up on a wall out of the way.

I think I'll be able to hit all the important sats. Ramjet mentions above with it on the kitchen wall on a pole & T+K brackets.

On the first photo of your main property put the dish on the extension part of the house which i assume is the kitchen, This should give you enough clearance from the pitch of the roof for a fairly good line of sight.

that link doesnt seem too bad , although digicon may have better ideas on separate buys, and the T-K brackets with scaffold pole is a better idea when it comes to adjustment of the pole to get it "plumb" , its the method I use and always recommend, not the wall bracket used in that bundled deal. and yes to upgrading to the inverto ultra black too as you need the best signals possible from your location

I think you are now on the right track, and if you can scan 0.8w through to 42e from your eventual position on one of the 2 red lines you should be fine, just forget about anything west of you as its rare you will go there anyway. all the sats you want or need are south east of you so ideal for your chosen positions indicated by your red lines

I was just thinking of looking for that post in one of the recent threads, so glad you have already found it

I wouldnt bother with a dreambox as they are almost all clones now

If you mount on the rear Extension then you will need as ramjet clearly states a T&K Bracket with at least a Scaffold pole

Comes in at about ?120 all components are way better than the Set in the Link, You will of course have to provide some funds for a a Scaffold Pole which you could source cheap so may come slightly over the ?115 Link budget but you are getting quality parts.
