    Setanta accepting new subscribers

    Setanta accepting new subscribers--Saturday, June 13 2009

Setanta is once again accepting new subscribers after nearly a week where the subscription pages of its website and its subscription phone lines were closed.

The move comes only hours after it was revealed that Russian-born American tycoon Len Blavatnik offered Setanta a ?20m lifeline. It has not been publicly confirmed that the deal has been done, though its acceptance of new customers is a sign that it may have avoided going into administration. Blavatnik is believed to have contacted Setanta's board approximately 48 hours ago.

In a statement, Setanta said: "As has been widely reported in various media channels, Setanta Sports and investors are in the process of securing the future of the business.

"All of our channels are still broadcasting across all platforms and our subscribers can continue to enjoy our programming and we are delighted to bring you live events this weekend such as UFC 99 and the St. Jude PGA TOUR golf event from Memphis.

"We are taking subscriptions from new customers... We thank you for your continued interest in Setanta Sports and look forward to bringing you a wealth of sport over the coming months and years."

Tonight's move comes after a tumultuous month for the sports broadcaster. On June 2, it defaulted on a ?3m payment to the SPL. This week, it stopped accepting new subscriptions; was the subject of emergency talks; had its sales via BT Vision suspended; vowed to stay on the air; attempted a number of rescue scenarios; all before apparently being saved by Blavatnik.
