Hi guys,
Sorry this is a bit lame but i'm still learning, if its allowed, could someone explain to me what "satellite Keys" are and how u use them

there are 2 main "types" listed on forums

biss keys, which are keys in hexadecimal and entered into the biss section of the keys section of your patch, to open the channel itself, like fox sports on 30w for example

there are also softcams, which again are hexadecimal keys, placed it to sets within a file that can be opened or altered using notepad plus, so the relevant set with the correct I.D. has the details for the hex characters that are the "key" to open the channel or channels at that particular time and date, and the providers sometimes change these on a regular basis, like bulsat on 39e, so an example of those keys opening a channel is like DIEMA on 39e. these keys can either be put in by remote control or by adding the latest softcam to your patched box

the exact methods vary from box to box, but the principle and outcomes are always the same

Just to add to what ramjet has very clearly explained that if you own a closed source receiver then as stated some keys need entering manually via the remote for the channel to open, if on the other hand you own a Linux E1/E2 receiver then the softcam.key file will be read automatically including Biss keys by the box itself.

Thank you both gents, mega advice as usual, my box is a protek 9700 so i'm non the wiser. I think I will have to do alot more research as what you've told me is like the" theory of reletivity",i'm too new to this to understand, i've got a year on my gift so time to gen up before i need to look at other sat boxes, thanks again gents......Doc

well, this is not kindergartan but a technical advice forum and so you have to learn the ropes and all the terms, you also have to learn about the box you bought, in your case the protek

I think we can safely assume your box is patched, so you now need to learn where your keys are for biss , irdeto etc, and then obtain the key for a channel that you currently do not open, and try to open it using the key in the correct place, so that you learn by DOING

so maybe try fox on 30w using a biss key, or nba tv on 10e, and nova sport/diema on bulsat on 39e using a softcam key , that way you learn to use both methods and learn about your box at the same time

I would say no box opens them automatically , they all rely on the owner patching the box, and the owner putting in the various keys into the correct places, by various methods according to the box

so it could be by ftp, or a usb stick adding a softcam , or editing the keys directly using ftp or your remote control

so it depends on the box, the patch, and the different ways that can be employed for each box

but none of them are "automatic"

The difference are that on a closed sorce receiver you have to enter the keys manually either via remote or another method and so on when they change, so if you had say at least 40 biss keys/CCW krys entered to maintain these if they changed all at the same time which i doubt is pretty time consuming.

The advantage of an E1/E2 receiver is that you just load the one softcam.key file which holds every single type of key for the channels you want to open via FTP then just select the type of cam you require that opens the channel you require via the remote control
