    Tricky little project!

Right can anyone give me advice to a problem I have encountered while trying to swap my sisters existing Sly box with another receiver. Currently she has the existing box under the stairs (one of these smarthomes) and has a sly eye connected to her tv in the other room. She doesnt want any new cable run through the house. Can someone tell me:

    1. What is the best receiver that would have a powered RF out put and if the sly needs to be replaced with a compatible one, which one?
    2. If I find the right box and eye is it a simple case of swapping both and connecting?
    3. As a noob to the sly or magic eye setup does the picture come out in HD??
    4. Would a triax trilink kit work better??

I will run a powerline adapter from her router which is in the back room and plug in under the stairs so that not an issue.

Just wondered if anyone else had this situation and how did they solve!!

there are several detailed thread on these issues so I suggest you use the search and find them all and have a good read of them

    answers

    1) none of the third party receivers have a powered rf output , and none are magic eye compatible

    2) not possible, you would have to use an adapter from the scart or phono outputs to convert to rf and also to power the eyes too

    3) the magic eye is purely to send infra red from the eyes to the bespoke rf detector inside the sly box, nothing to do with the picture or sound

the rf output of a sly box is SD and is an@logue in rf between the rf channels 21 and 69 , so its an SD rf an@logue output

HD over hdmi is only achieved from the hdmi socket using a lead to the hdmi equipped tv

    4) The TRIAX TRILINK or the OMNILINK or Blue blaster and a suitable rf scart to rf console adapter will do all the jobs the sly box will, so one or more alternatives are required

so its not a simple case of swapping over, and without the hdmi connection she wont get any HD pictures either

    EDIT

found the main discussion thread here http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...box-rf-299453/ from a year ago

as for suitable rf output boxes, you have the technomate tm5402 and the older spiderbox 9000 which have unpowered rf outputs and send SD an@logue rf over the coaxial aerial outputs to any an@logue tuner equipped tv

Thanks ramjet, i knew it wouldnt be straight forward!!! I'll see can I convince her to run a cable as this would be simpler!

What do you think about a hdmi sender to send the signal from under the stairs to the sitting room? would something like this have enough strength to send a signal i wonder?

If your going to run another cable and want HD then its either Cat5/6 for the cheaper option or you could run standard Coax but the adaptors for this are twice the price over a Cat5/6 HDMI extender.

Plus most HDMI extenders available now have IR Pass built in if you so wish for a little bit more money and that includes the RG6 adaptors.
