i'm trying to run a sky+ box alongside a tm5402 would i need to split one of the feeds ,as the sky+ box has 2 inputs for receiving the signal or could i just use 1 of the feeds from the sky dish to run the sky+ box connecting it to input 1 on the back of the sky+ box

you would be better using one of the feeds directly into the 5402 and then use the loop out function on the 5402 to feed back into the $ly+ box, Just remember that for the loop out function to work the 5402 has to be on standby
