    I might need some pointers....

SO the Quad is here looking all very plush.. Managed to get it to a point where I can actually watch something which is a good start.

For the time being can I ask do both tuners need to scan for watch one record another or will the scan on tuner 1 also be good for tuner 2.

Been mooching around OpenMips and there's an option for updating the bootloader as it's out of date but comes with the disclaimer at your own risk which doesn't fill me with confidence. So generally speaking if the correct file is applied what's the chances of a brick?

Lastly is there a newbie friendly image I could flash the unit with. I know VIX is the dogs wotsits but to get a .cfg to run there's additional files to download and install. I seem to remember there is an image knocking about that has most of the files built in and all that's needed is a .cfg file FTP'd to a folder in the file tree, AAF or maybe HD Freaks.. didn't have the sense to write it down

Vix is probably the simplest image to use for just viewing tv and the most used plugins. Most of the configuration is done for you which is why it's popular. You will find a lot of people use it but an awful lot don't. There are very few images that make it easy to install cams for obvious reasons but don't be disheartened it is no where near as difficult as you may think. Essential programs to install on pc are dcc (dreambox control Centre), dbe (dreambox edit) and notepad++, dcc is used to ftp files into box (pretty much drag and drop) dbe is used to edit and ftp channel lists if you choose not to use autobouquets and notepad++ is best used to create and edit your dreaded .cfg file which is really only one line of text a lot of the time

Biggest thing is to make sure you have the vix image for your box or you will kill it very quickly. Remember vix make images for lots of different boxes. Read twice and be safe.

Not done anything yet... bracing myself!

Is there any benefit flashing an up-to date bootloader before installing VIX? Been reading so much nothing's making sense now.

No idea on the gigablue unless it is required to run oe2 images which I would expect to run straight off the bat on a new box. As far as reading till nothing makes sense then that's par for the course to begin with. Sleep on it and a it will make more sense in the morning. In the meantime someone may be able to give you a definitive answer on the bootloader.

Edit. Quick Look around says you should not need to update the bootloader. But if you do try it make doubly and triply sure it is the correct file.

Lol at boutique. You mean bouquet. Vix has auto bouquets built in. Go to service searching in the menu and the option for auto bouquet should be there. These can be set to update automatically overnight so you are never without a channel no matter what frequencies change. A far as picons go they should be in plugins section also under the menu button on vix. P.s there are hundreds of plugins, once in the plugins screen press whatever button it tells you to on the bottom of the screen for download and that will take you to the vix server

Hello HH. Got your message on the other thread but I'll post here and save hijacking that chaps question.

Brace yourself because I can scarcely believe it myself but I have with more luck than judgement got the sky channel list up with picons and EPG updating every day at 04.00 AND I've FTP'd a cam file over to the GB ready for the .cfg file, after that's on I ain't touching anything else!!

May not seem a big deal to the pro's but for me it's great, well chuffed!

oh you will touch everything thats the beauty of this bug. Once up and running make a full backup and ftp it from box hdd to pc and keep it safe, that way when you screw it up playing (and you will, we all have and still do) you can just load the backup onto usb and flash it so box is straight back to where it was with all settings and cams running before you messed it up. For someone like yourself who is prepared to read and help yourself you will always find help on this forum if you need it. There is another that I won't mention where you will also find lots of support especially on things that we don't speak about on here.

BTW I would advise channel list be updating 30 mins before epg that way you always have the epg to match the latest channels and they won't clash trying to update at the same time

Well as shocking as it sounds the Giga is setup and running like a dream, I even managed to get the cam plug in and .cfg FTP'd over, installed and running. I've backed up the image so if anything does go wrong I can simply re-load

Just going to leave it now over the Christmas holiday's and let my very happy son marvel at all the cartoon channels he can watch now.

Got to say I'm annoyed I just didn't buy the Alien 2.. my brother is having some good results and paid 70 odd quid less. Still, that's life.

The alien is not for someone new to this game. If something goes wrong there is nowhere near the support you get with a more mainstream box. The enigma 2 side of the box is much better than it was but I think they are still struggling with the spark side. You may have paid a little more but the Alien is very much an experimental box. Don't get me wrong the alien is still a good box but will require a lot more user input, especially as things progress
