    Need help plz

i got a sky+hd box (model amstrad drx890) from my friend. I purchase mk4 sky satellite dish + quad lnb & 10m twin cable from ebay. I want to watch free sat/free to air channels.

    I have two questions.
    1. Is it legal to watch like the way i am setting up my satellite system? I don?t have any contract with sky.
    2. Will the sky+hd box work? Do i need to do any modification/frequency settings for free to air channels as it is a sky equipment? Or once i setup the disk in the correct direction it will automatically show the channels like plug and play?

    Thanks

    1. Yes perfectly legal

    2. If there is still a card in the box you will receive fta channels (you may have to call sky to get them to activate fta, but not usually necessary). The + section won't work so you won't be able to watch one channel and record another. If there is no card in the box then you won't receive anything.

      not strictly true

the sly box will pick up all FTA channels from the epg and let you watch them

the "switched off card" will let you watch a few FTV channels as well, it will also "postcode" the box so depends on the region it was enabled in

no card in the box will default it to london epg and so the regional channels will be london channels , like bbc 1 london , itv london etc

the PLUS feature will not work without paying sly a monthly fee to turn it on

any sly digital box will let you watch freesat channels (FTA channels)

      and YES, its perfectly legal

Didn't know it would work without card. Last sky box I tried with no card didn't show anything so it must have been goosed

I still have an old Sky+ box. Comes in handy for recording Nascar on Motors TV (FTV) when I'm watching something else on my Openbox.

I connect it to my DVD recorder.

Not sure if it's still the case, but Liverpool TV & a couple of Sony TV channels were also FTV channels that you could watch with an old card.

yes m8, still the case that a handful of FTV channels are opened by the card, but recently c5HD failed as its part of their HD pay service now

for recording a series or anything else would you not be better off with a linux sat box rather than keeping and using the sky box ,just a thought
