This is something I'm thinking of having a play with but the general consensus is to use a 3g router and dongle.
Preferred combination seems the Edimax 3G-6200n router with the Huawie E1750 dongle.
The isp provider also comes into play.
I'm hoping others can share their experiences with this. I'm trying to sort something similar for someone I know who needs this setup due to no broadband.

A couple of threads below.
I now have a Nexus 5 with a 3 sim and teathering enabled, so will try this out on my next outing. This is using a dm800se with built in wifi to talk to mifi and/or teltonika that I tested, but will try with Nexus next.
It is important to see which provider gives good coverage for the area you are in, but as the posts above, I have found three to be better for coverage, and more importantly, ping time.

Am I right in thinking with these Mifi you only need this and a sim? and no dongle?

Yeah it is basically a router on a sim network. My dad has been looking into this. He is on 3 and had unlimited data so the cheapest and best way would be to get a wifi bridge for his dreambox 800se and turn his iPhone into a hotspot. When he try's it I Will let you know how he gets onLast edited by griff; 30 March, 2014, 23:04.Comment

I'm going to try one of the Huawei E5331/E5332 High Speed 3G 21.1Mbps Mi-Fi Unlocked Modem with a Three 3g sim and will have to use a bridge like a homeplug as I cant see no ethernet points on the picture or product info. Wondering if i can use my 3g Samsung phone also.Yeah it is basically a router on a sim network. My dad has been looking into this. Think you need a wifi wireless Ethernet bridge adapter (not a home plug).
Google "vonet wifi bridge", these seem popular and quite cheap.
If you do go for a mifi like the one you suggested, make sure it is fully un-locked (not just network unlocked) as some provider branded ones also lock other features such as max number of connections, and no fall back to 2g, GPRS, EDGE etc.

I'm guessing the Vonets goes straight into the back of the dreambox rather than like the homeplug which is in the mains.Think you need a wifi wireless Ethernet bridge adapter (not a home plug).

The Huawei mifi I checked out is open to all networks but initially set up for three network which I would try first anyway.

Think you will find half the battle is the provider. I'm going to try the Mifi route with the vonets bridge if I can get a deal somewhere.my friend had a signal at the caravan on sunday with vodafone but couldnt get on google.but sum apps worked on his phone...but girl in VF shop said mite only get 2g ?35 7 day return money back on a mifi ..may as well give it a bash see if i a least get internet..VF web signal coverage says...there are no isuses in that area..so il keep use up to speed..
Will try 3 network and Giffgaff first as they seem the cheapest and have decent coverage.

Be careful with the three branded one, these are generally set to 3g only.
In the user interface you can normally set 3g, edge etc or automatic, the three branded one I tried is locked to 3g only, so may not work on 2g/edge/gprs on other networks.
Although I unlocked mine to work on any network, the 3g setting is still locked to 3g, if you need more info, let me know and I'll dig mine out and do some screen shots for you to explain. I have since read there is a trick using firefox to get round that bit but not tried it.

Hi guys got my mifi and three 3g sim card.
Ive dug out a dreambox lan card has anyone tried one of these before? Trying to use it as a bridge on my own network first for testing.

Update on the Huawei Mifi E5332 and Three 3g sim.
Got them working fine watching The Masters on Sky Sports 4HD but added a dreambox usb lan card in the back of the Dreambox. Another option would be a bridge like vonets.
Only problem I'm having is the security encryption, box connects and then loses the link when I select any of the wep,wpa etc.
At present its working on an open network.
Picture does glitch now and then but more than watchable. Would give it 8/10
Watched a film on TS Media and was perfect.
If this is you're only option its worth it.
