Im looking for a motorised satelite system for a Camper van?

    Hi all - Great site.

I am trying to source a motorised satellite dish / box for my parents camper van. The are s#y subscribers at home, so can they use the home card in a different box? Is there another box / dish to view without their home s#y card?

They have been quoted ?2500 for an Oyster type auto search system which can be used throughout Europe. This seems rather expensive!!!!

Any advice would be much appreciated - I have looked at packages from Maplins which are a fraction of the cost - but I'm unsure about reliability in Europe and manual set up time.

A motorised version would be great as they will not have to adjust the dish on at different locations - it will do it automatically.

    Thanks alot

keep your eye out on Lidl's website.. They have the suitcase kits for ?30 which includes.. Dish, LNB, Sat Meter, Coax, F Connectors and Comag Receiver.. they just had them in about a month ago so it'll probably be a few months before they are back

There's one on eBay.. pick up only from Kent.. ?5.. Item Number 200364508875

If they want to watch sky then its easier for them to take their normal sky receiver & card with them and just plug the coax cable from the travel kit into it

Trust me they dont want a motorised system.. the dish comes with a sat meter.. it takes 30 seconds to adjust as no ladders are needed, just twist it until you get a good signal.. a motorised camping system is a bit overkill

if they had a motorised system they would need to know their exact latitude and longitude of each place they parked not just the camp site, then set it up in the receiver.. which you cant do in a sky receiver.. and getting a sky card to work in a non sky box is very hard at the moment due to the upgrade of encryption

.. they will change location each time they move to a new camp site, which on a touring holiday can be as much as every 3 days..

put it this way when i went on a cycling expedition we camped in a new location each night, they were on average 100 miles apart

oysters are good but very very expensive and not worth the money in my opinion.

personally i'd go for something like this 150W Car Power Inverter DC 12V to AC 220V USB Adapter on eBay (end time 23-Jul-09 10:03:56 BST) there is always people with satellite dishes up at camp sites so it only takes a few mins to get it alligned, and they can just take their sky receicver with them and plug it in.....i have a 70cm gemini and quad lnb at my caravan mounted on a pole from my jockey wheel and never had any problems with mine

You need to do some homework, do they intend to travel across Europe?

The limiting factor is reception of astra 2D at 28'E which carries the main ITV/BBC channels. It has a narrow beam for the UK so a larger dish is requied if they intend to go a fair few miles from the UK.

Have a look at the foot print of Astra 2D below to get an idea.

Click here -> Astra 2D at 28.2?E - LyngSat Maps

If they want the channels from 2D then a large dish is needed, if they can manage without BBC/ITV then a smaller one will do.
