Long time lurker scared to ask 'question'

    Hi All

very long time lurker, have always wanted to set up a motorised dish and receiver

I know most of you probably hate the f5s term, anyway i have been looking at the vu solo or duo

Really honest question this what is a twin tuner - is this a double lnb

Also the vu can only pick up sd soon so whats the advantage of this to me if i have the crappy f5s - am i just replacing one for the other?

i have browsed some of the stickies but am still a bit vague

Worst bit is i am the owner of an electrical engineers but this is one area i know nothing about

If anyone could spare 5 minutes and advise me on the possible best options i would really appreciate it

skyboxes are a joke to get people into sat with so many problems as people dont research before buying also no safety built in and run hot, some have gone on fire.
proper boxes you mention solo original as there are clones is a single tuner box-1 cable
vu duo / solo2 duo2 are twin tuner boxes as you can record on second tuner to internal hdd.
$ly hd will go off but many hd channels will still work bbc/itv/ch4 etc.
twin tuner needs 2 cables to lnb on dish

A E2 based box will give you more than just sat just, I use my ibox2 for plex iptv and lots more than just watching sat tv, much better than the F3 I was running for a year would not go back !

          1) is this a double lnb

          2) Also the vu can only pick up sd soon so whats the advantage of this to me if i have the crappy f5s - am i just replacing one for the other?

          1) , no , the twin tuner duo or solo 2 has 2 tuners so requires 2 feeds from one or more lnb,s , so either from one single lnb with one output , or better still a twin or quead lnb with 2 (or more) outputs , or from 2 separate lnb,s with one (or more) outputs

so if using like a plus box it would have 2 coaxial feeds from a twin or quad output lnb on a fixed dish , usually fixed on 28e for the uk , but could be all kinds of variations like one feed from the fixed dish and anotehr from a motorised dish for example , or a separate feed from 2 dishes pointed at 2 different satellites

          2) a HD box including the one you have now will continue to function on HD channels as well as SD channels , so for example freesat will always work from 28.2e and the FTA HD channels will continue to work

you are confusing reception of fta and scrambled channels with the actual decoding of scrambled channels , so lets assume the decoding fails as its doing now , the FTA channels will continue to work regardless , as no decoding is required (should be obvious to you with your background)

the HD boxes are not even sold with any guaramtees of being able to decode a scrambled channel , they are usually supplied with fta firmware and will continue to work in the manner sold, fta , on both SD and HD channels

the linux boxes like VU are much, much better then the bespoke boxes like the f5s and can do much, much more , like streaming and downloading from the net , using plugins similar to the ones used in xbmc like 1 channel or icefilms etc

the twin tuner range can be set to record one or more channels onto an internal hdd , same as sly plus does , or record one channel and watch another , the possibilities are endless so dont get tunnel vision about one set of channels becoming unwatchable due to new scrambling techniques purposely designed to stop you watching them

              Hi all

Thanks for the replys, i am going to go with the vu duo, now i have a sly dish at the moment but am going to get a motorised setup also to compliment this so i would have 2 separate feeds into this ie twin tuner

Can the motorised dish be set up easily? or should i order the gear and pay someone to do it for me

              Cheers guys

Always have a go yourself first if you feel confident doing this as the site has some very good guides in the Red Stickie sections for you to read and guide you through
