You can use the Sky boxes without a card for free channels, it is kind of limited though as you wouldn't get ch5 etc.
If you already have a dish you could buy a freesat box for about ?40. Or you could keep your existing setup and buy a freesat from Sky card for ?20.00.
As for updating the existing Sky cards, if you mean the blue one with a yellow house, then no. They will soon be deactivated and be useless. -
there are plenty of cheap FTA satellite boxes on ebay..
this model was my first receiver..
