Hi, last year i got a spider box HD, put on a custom firmware, and it was great for everything i needed to do. Now i feel its time to upgrade to something better, that can record and has a better interface. I can see that VU+ and Satdream boxes have dedicated forums, are these ultimately the main two brands that i should ideally be focusing on? could someone quickly explain the pro's and con's for each, or recommend something else?
spiderbox upgrade.. whats best option?

i am assuming you owned one of the SB6000's which came with a free Gift once patched, Your next logical upgrade is a Linux receiver if your staying with satellite and dont have a cable enabled household the look at something like the Solo2 or TM-Nano-2T both similar receivers and will allow you to install a 2.5" hard drive for recording purposes. As for the gift side you will now have to sort this yourself on these types of receivers

many thanks for the advice, i bought the box and patched it myself....looking through the new VU+ boxes it seems that the solo2 is the box ill likely go for as it got 2 tuners so i can record and watch different channels. do these boxes need to be also patched to allow a gift to work?i am assuming you owned one of the SB6000's which came with a free Gift once patched, Your next logical upgrade is a Linux receiver if your staying with satellite and dont have a cable enabled household the look at something like the Solo2 or TM-Nano-2T both similar receivers and will allow you to install a 2.5" hard drive for recording purposes. the main failing of the spiderbox was that its EPG was horrible, how good is the EPG on a solo2? is it possible to customise it at all?Comment

as rules state and as stated above " As for the gift side you will now have to sort this yourself on these types of receivers " google
yes you can tweak this box and have 7 day epg loading to usb, picons and if on vix image run autobouquetmaker to keep your channels working
forgot to mention you can add plugins like kodi tsmedia and if lucky view stuff

We are not adverse to discussing up to a point about Emulators and Softcams but yes the 'Gift' 'Magic' part needs to be inadvertently coded into other words.
As mentioned above you will get all that as well as with using a Softcam and matching emulator/Cam will open quite a few channels FOC if you have a motorised dish system
