Sky UK to stop Satellite broadcasts

Sky UK to stop Satellite broadcasts

    Found this posted elsewhere:
    Quote:
In a surprise move BSkyB today announced they are to cease Satellite transmissions in 12 Months. They have given SES Astra, the owner of the Satellites used by BSkyB, 12 Months notice to relinquish all their satellite capacity.

Senior VP for operations Michael Hunt said "We have been heavily investing in IPTV delivery with both our On Demand and Now TV service, it's now time to expand this to our core service. Starting today, customers with the Sky+HD boxes will receive some channels over their internet connection and by this time next Year, all services will be delivered over the internet only.

We will have the option to broadcast an unlimited number of channels and even Ultra HD 4K for customers with at least a 50Mbit Internet connection.

This will also help stamp out some of the Piracy problems that have beset our Satellite service, the new Internet delivered service will be streamed to a single box and remove the possibility of it being intercepted illegally."

When asked about customers with capped Internet downloads, Mike Hunt replied "Obviously some people on capped or slower Internet connections could have issues, we recommend they switch to our excellent MegaFibre+ Internet service which will become available shortly for a reasonable ?100 per Month. It will be tailored to suit our HD and 4K service and be free of congestion at prime time.

Those on 8Mbit or slower connections will be unable to receive full HD channels, so they should look to upgrade in the next 12 Months as should anyone with a Monthly cap of less that 100 GB of data.

We will be expanding the reach of our MegaFibre+ service and hope to reach 50% of the UK population by 2020. Those outside the current service area of central Milton Keynes can apply for priority Installation at a cost of ?3500. We have appointed an experienced company to complete the advanced priority installations, messers Bodgit & Scarper (formerly Trotters Independent Trading) based in Peckham, they have Years of experience in supplying the latest technology and providing excellent customer service.

We have other innovations in the pipeline and will announce them in due course."

its more to do with ?????s than piracy, an opportunity here for sly to make a LOT of money, but iptv is the future of pay tv, freeview excepted of course apart from the odd fv channel like vintage.tv

Although it is april the 1st the part about delivering services via IP is actually true its being worked on although the timeframe is more like 5 years to give the UK a chance to get at least 99% fibre internet equipped, its logical really BT already do it for there HD channels fo there fibre customers and just think how many millions can be saved by ditching there 'Ladder Monkey' fitters, BT already send you the box via the post and setup yourself and most other IPTV company's do the same EE,Talk Talk etc...

as i said the future of pay tv is iptv, when sky does hav it up and running i would imagine their overheads will be a lot less, so its a logical move for them.

LOL, the 1st draft was too believable, so I increased prices and added the Del-Boy ref near the end. There were still a few fell for it on various forums

But but but, on a serious note, sky own most of the content (I mean broadcast) on 28E so surely when they leave 28E for internet then surely there will be fack all on 28E?
                    Missus will be unlivable with.

They would have to have some form of backup service the same as Freeview does now with the BBC satback on 27.5? west, although with quite a few different satellite company's to choose from to actually rent space SES (Astra) are not the only fish (sat) in the sea (space).

Its only a matter of timescale for them i presume as even Freeview are looking at an IP service instead of through the aerial, this is already being planned as the Government will make billions from the sell off of the UHF spectrum for the forthcoming 5G,6G,7G etc..

I rather like these constructive articulate and precise answers if only politicians would do the same the UK would be a better place and education would be on the forefront instead of on the back burner
