3D HDTV Closer than you Think !

Pace has announced that it will showcase a new set top box with a 3D-enabled user interface (UI) at IBC 2009, which gets under way tomorrow in Amsterdam.

The Yorkshire-based manufacturer has created a hybrid receiver with a fully-integrated 3D interface and embedded 3D graphics chipset, which enables operators to utilise greater levels of interactivity and graphical effects.

According to Pace, the box will also open up new functionality for consumers, including easier access to cross-platform media content. The firm now intends to make it available to software and middleware partners so that they can develop overlaying solutions.

As the 3D UI can support a variety of services - including video on demand, IP-based EPGs or graphical animations - the box will initially be aimed at Telco and IPTV operators.

However, it can also be customised to a variety of requirements, such as service providers wanting to launch an advanced UI or offer greater visual interactivity over existing HD services.

Pace France president Mathias Hautefort said: "We believe this innovation extends the boundaries of the traditional UI, bringing a truly engaging, interactive experience to consumers across both video and the internet."

The growth of 3D in home entertainment is currently gathering pace, with Sky confirming plans to launch a 3D TV channel next year to piggyback on its existing high definition infrastructure.

Sony also intends to introduce 3D technology into its consumer products by the end of next year, including Bravia TV sets, PS3 consoles, Blu-ray players and laptops.

    Regards.

Thread title is somewhat misleading. This is only for a 3D GUI not for 3D TV viewing.

I like the idea of a 3D HDTV but not the thought of buying a new TV or sitting in front of it wearing dorky glasses.
