Very import whether fully supported or not e.g if an original vix image is used on any zgemma you will brick the box. The o.p needs to understand this part is very very important. My experience with patched images on cheap boxes are probably the same as all the other veterans in that yes you can get them easy in the beginning, then when the novelty of testing the new cheap box wears off, the guys who were patching the images will go back to their much more expensive better quality and also better supported receivers.
Help me, I'm new.

I've just updated my Zgemma 2s to the latest openvix 3.2.003 image, (available from zgemma.tv) once I've ensure the box runs ok I will post a install guide it will be slightly different as there's extra thing to setup and extra plugins to install. One thing I have notice is the ABM has been updated and now sort's out all the BT Interactive channels into there own bouquet and places Premier HD into sports, so lot less work with custom channel ie only Setenta HD.
The openvix 3.2.003 is the latest image from openvix website but don't download from there, as this image isn't compatible with your box you need to get it from zgemma.tvComment

If you use any of the official Zgemma Images instead of patched ones you can safely update any new packages including ABM
Official Images are:
OpenATV
OpenHDF
Opendroid
Openspa
Eurosat
Italysat
Vix4e2
any of the above images you can install and do software updates without fear of bricking the box which will keep all your plugins and addons up to date and working, personally for the life of me i do not understand why people use patched images and then when an addon or plugin does not work cant do a thing about it until the image is patched again. makes no sense

For me and I would guess the majority of zgemma openvix users it's the image either provided or install by the box seller. It's the one I got use to using and experimenting with. Will I try an Atv image in the future? Dam right I will, one day in the future when as you say there's a problem with a plugin or addon and no new zgemma.tv openviz image I'll jump ship or it could be that I'm bored one day and fancy a change so install a different image to see what it's like.
However, there seems to be a bit of scaremongering going on here with regards 'bricking' your box, if the openvix image you install is from the official zgemma.tv website, then that is a tested image for the box and is safe to install.Comment

I can fully understand where your coming from but buying from Box sellers does nothing for the learning curve as its setup straight out of the box, I understand this for the Plug & Play brigade its great to just switch on and watch the problems arise later and they have not got a scooby on how to fix it cue endless posts of "Zgemma problems"
If you buy from a reputable seller/dealer the Zgemma series are actually pre-flashed with a standard OpenATV image to help you get going hence learning Curve.
No scaremongering on Bricking the Box the OpenPLI and OpenVix image are patched with XP1000 drivers which run the same BCM chipset and so that is why you cannot do a manual software update on the patched image so if there is a change to ABM you have to wait for another patched image or do a manual .ipk install
Just to clarify the above that both OpenPLI and OpenVix do not officially support the Zgemma range and more than likely never will, so any image you use form those party's will be always be patched.

Oh you better believe it, I went from an openbox to a zgemma due to the EPG issues, there must be loads of openbox users out there thinking the same and reading up on the box, it's only a matter of time before the forums is bombarded with 'Please help, my zgemma box won't do this......'I can fully understand where your coming from but buying from Box sellers does nothing for the learning curve as its setup straight out of the box, I understand this for the Plug & Play brigade its great to just switch on and watch the problems arise later and they have not got a scooby on how to fix it cue endless posts of "Zgemma problems"
My zgemma came with Atv installed but my seller provided a link for an image which had everything you need to get your box up and working with the ultimate carrot for the plug and play user a '$ky blue' skin, who isn't going to install this especially when the default images both Atv and openvix don't come with many plugins ie TSmedia, IPTV player and off course S~~~~~~ manager, which I found out this morning installing 3.2.003 image.
In fact there is sellers on the bay who sell these images for a couple of bucks to people who haven't got a clue, so the problem is only going to get worse.Comment

One quick tip. Crossepg isn't always a good choice for openpli based images (almost all that start with word open) xmltv importer works better for sat side but doesn't always have new channel epg straight away and epg refresh is by far the best for cable side. Openatv 5.0 in particular on the zgemma range doesn't run crossepg very well or even install on the gemma 2s. Even my quad+ and uno often crash during auto download of cross epg running Openatv which is still the best image in my opinion.Comment
-
Wow, I think digicon should rename this thread to pros & cons of e2 Zgemma images, readers will learn a lot. The main reason I've kept the openvix image after my learning curve was that the crossepg works perfect with openvix, no crashing and full 7 days without missing channel info, it was the xmltv importer that caused me problems to the stage were I now recommend removing it on an openvix installation.Comment
-
It could be renamed to pros and cons of any E2 image. These little quirks aren't limited to zgemma or any other box in particular, it is just the nature of the beast and why it should always be treated as a hobby, not just a method of watching cheap tv. The cheap tv brigade will always have problems because they aren't involved in the forums so don't read posts like this where without actually being about a particular problem it holds a wealth of information about the images in general. Quite frankly most of the people who are happy to help have been around for a long while and may not have experienced every fault, have probably read a thread about it somewhere on their travelsComment

Zgemma 2s OpenAtv 5.1 Guide
I've changed from Openvix 3.02.004 to OpenAtv 5.1 due OpenAtv having Superior Picture Quality (IMHO), long term software support ie Software updates and All plugins installing and working (Kodi, mediaportal and others not working on vix). The guide also uses a working Crossepg plugin which I find personally better than xmltv importer plugin due to Crossepg filling all channels with EPG data.
Thanks to digicon and happy_h for advising me to take off the blinkers.
OpenAtv 5.1 guide
You will need a 4gb USB drive and/or a larger USB drive if you want to record programs and the box connect by LAN.
Due to this been on DK forums, I won’t give open instructions on how to install any lines, all I’ll say is once you've completed the guide Blue button and second option down then ask google
First you need to download these files;
OpenAtv5.1 image - (Latest one on the website)
Picons –
Crossepg Plugin 0.6.2 -
Bottom of Post-as an attachment
Filezilla –
Pre and Install openatv image
1. On PC format USB drive to FAT32 (quick)
2. Unzip ‘openatv-5.1-zgemmas2s_usb.zip’ image
3. Transfer ‘zgemma’ folder to root of USB drive
4. Insert USB into SAT box and Power on.
5. Once ‘USB’ displayed on Box a quick press and release ‘standby’ button on box, this will then display ‘FLSH’
6. If no ‘FLSH’ then use another USB drive as zgemma can be fussy with some makes of USB drive
7. Leave box, it should take 5 mins to flash then it will auto boot, it will boot into the Post Flash Initial Setup Wizard.
Post Flash Initial Setup–( Use remote scroll left right up and down arrows as required)
System boots in German, don’t worry we’ll change that soon
1. Select your TV connectiom type ie HDMI press Ok
2. Select your TV resolution ie 1080i press Ok
3. Select your Refresh rate ie 50mhz press Ok

Menu-setup-service searching-Autobouquetsmaker-config

? Keep all non-ABM bouquets to ‘No’ this will delete all those German channel bouquets
Menu-setup-service searching-Providers to the following;
? Freesat -No
? Sky ROI -Yes
? Sky ROI Area-ROI HD
? all other Sky ROI-No
? Sky UK-Yes
? Sky UK Area- Scroll right to get ‘your area’ custom ie mine’s Scottish East Custom this will replace all none working HD channels with their working SD conterparts
? Sky UK FTA only-No
? Sky UK Gen main Bouquets-Yes
? Sky Uk Gen Section Bouquets-Yes

How to add custom channels to your bouquets Method 1 needs doing after each ABM scan
Add custom channels ie setanta HD or any other channels you want.
? Select ‘fav’ on your remote then the green button then select 28.2e
? Scroll thru the channel and find setenta HD
? Press ‘menu’ and then ‘add service to bouquet’ select the ‘sports’ bouquet
? Do this for any other channel you want to add to any bouquet
You will have to do this everytime you do a ABM scan as these channels will be removed for the new scanned bouquets, hence why I have disabled ‘daily scans’ and just do manual scans whenever a channel change is published on king of sats website then re add the channels again, I prefer this way as it keeps all my sports channels in the 1 bouquet.
How to add custom channels to your bouquets Method 2 will not be deleted after each ABM scan
Add custom channels ie setanta HD or any other channels you want to the ‘Favourite’ bouquet or any Custom bouquet you have made.
? Select ‘fav’ on your remote then the green button then select ‘28.2e’
? Scroll thru the channel and find setenta HD
? Press ‘menu’ and then ‘add service to bouquet’ select the ‘Favourite’ bouquet
? Do this for any other channel you want to add to this bouquet
Set your Startup channel and remove any remaining German bouquets
Press Fav and go to your channel you want the box to show on startup, press menus and select 'set as startup service' then select 'startup'
Press Fav and scroll down to any German Bouquets, press 'menu' then select 'remove this entry'
Install Picons & CrossEPG
1. Menu-information-network and note down the IP of the box ie 134.167.1.8 yours will be different

3. Install filezilla you downloaded earlier and run the program
4. Host box type in Sat box IP address, Username box type in 'root' then press quick connect

10. Select ‘enigma2-plugin-systemplugin-crossepg_0.6.2-svn-300-r0_mipsel.ipk’ and drag file to right box
Activate Picons, Localise the Weather and Install the Crossepg plugin
I use Crossepg, as it always fills all EPG channel data and is therefore better than ‘xmltv importer’ which can leave blanks in the epg. Later versions ain’t compatible with Zgemma Opentv images but we can use an older compatible version.
For Picons; Menu-system-EPG-GraphicalEPG settings – ‘service title mode –scroll to ‘picon and service name’ green button to Exit
For Picons; Fav-menu-settings - 'Show picons in service list' scroll to 'Yes' green button to Exit
For Crossepg; Menu-setup-software Management-Install Local Extension then

On you PC go to http://metrixweather.open-store.net/ enter your location and search it will give you a new 5 digit code put this code into;
Menu-Plgins-MyMetrixlite-Weather setting ,change weather ID to new 5 digit code then green button to save.
A Reboot is required Now for Picons, Weather App and Crossepg to work
Setting up CrossEPG
1. Menu-system-EPG-Crossepg-OpenTVproviders – select ‘Sky openTV’ and green to save (go back into this menu again and ensure green tick next to that selection)
2. Menu-system-EPG-Crossepg-configure and ‘schedule download’ to ‘once a day’
3. Menu-system-EPG-Crossepg-configure and ‘schedule download at’ a time to suit yourself, mine is 14:30 as I turn my box off at night, if you leave yours in standby then 00:30
4. Menu-system-EPG-Crossepg-configure and ‘Download on tune’ to ‘Yes’
5. Menu-system-EPG-Crossepg-Download Now and let the epg update
6. Menu-system-EPG-settings ‘EPG Location’ scroll to ‘/media/hdd’
7. Menu-system-EPG-settings ‘Automatic save’ to Yes
8. Menu-system-EPG-settings ‘save every(HR)’ – 7
9. Menu-system-EPG-load/save/delete – save EPG
Software Update and Crossepg 0.6.2
As the newer versions of Crossepg utilises the twin tuner function of the zgemma to retrieve the EPG data, this on an OpenAtv image will causes issues and won’t work. The older Crossepg 0.6.2 only utilises a single tuner and won’t crash/freeze the box, but the downside to this is it will change the channel to the EPG feed whilst it downloads the EPG info. So either do scheduled Crossepg downloads at night ie when box in standby or at a time when nobody watches the TV if you turn the box off at night.
Do the following on a Windows PC to stop Crossepg from updating, all other Openatv updates will not be affected and will update as per normal.
1. Click Start and select Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows features on or off.
2. Select the Telnet Client option and Click OK.
3. Open a Command Prompt (CMD) and run as Admin
4. Type 'telnet' then IP address of your Zgemma ie '192.168.1.8' then press enter
5. Type 'root' for login and press return
6. Type 'opkg flag hold enigma2-plugin-systemplugins-crossepg' and press return
7. Close CMD window and deselect Telnet client in Turn Windows features on or off
Install missing plugin feeds removed in later versions of Openatv
1. Unzip the enigma2-plugin-addt feeds_1.0_all file attached
2. Install the .ipk file using Filezilla to /hdd then install via Menu-setup-software Management-Install Local Extension
3. Menu-plugins Green button to add then 9th one down, install the required plugin for your system.
Sky Skin
A New sky skin on the scene is kiddac's slyk 1 HD, I've just installed this now and it's much better then 'openvix-blue-hd's skin and for a better user experience would advise all to install.
1. Unzip the enigma2-plugin-skins-slyk1hd_2.003-20151203_all file attached
2. Install the .ipk file using Filezilla to /hdd then install via Menu-setup-software Management-Install Local Extension
3. Menu-setup-system-user interface-skin-skin setup select slyk1hd skin and press Ok
4. Reboot the system
System image and Plugin updates
menu-setup-software management-software update. Wait for the updates to be shown then press 'green' button, do this weekly or monthly your personal choice.Comment

Hi Cheers for this dont know if it can be done my box has been set up through vermin tv but would like a few sky channels added and watch would it be possible also still trying to work out when i try record it keeps popping up i have not enough storage even though i have a 8gb peg connected.OpenVix update their firmware about every 7-10 days, I personally won't be updating my Zgemma at every new release but whenever I feel it's required ie every 5th release or a new major build, the guide will work for all releases on the zgemma download site below, just change the 3.02.004 to whatever the latest release number is ie 3.02.019

To setup TSmedia, on the remote press ?portal? then ?TSmedia? then ?desktop? ?tools? then ?software update? to get it to the latest version.
Sportsdevil in TSmedia/sports is the best for sports
Genesis in TSMedia/movies&series is the best for movies or box sets
Streaming from your zgemma to a PC
A great trick the zgemma can do is stream one channel to your PC, this is great if you want to watch the footy upstairs and your other half wants to watch Eastenders (Dual tuners)
? Put the zgemma to Eastenders
? On your PC open your web browser and type in your zgemmas IP address you should get openwebif interface
? Click ?sports? then click on the channel?s TV icon on the right hand side, this will either download a file or open the stream direct, depends on how you?ve set up your browser.
? Open the file with ?VLC? media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.en_GB.html
? For best results, stream just the SD channelsComment
