Singapore Telecommunications has secured English Premier League pay-TV broadcast rights in Singapore for three years, from the summer of 2010 until the end of the 2012/13 season.
The award sees SingTel take the rights from StarHub, which has broadcast the Premier League in Singapore for the last 12 years and will continue to do so until the end of the current season.
Financial figures were not officially released, but during the bidding process it was expected that SingTel would have to pay as much as US$270 million for the three-year contract - a sharp increase from the US$175 million that StarHub were paying.
The Premier League's international rights have been an ever-more lucrative revenue stream for England's top clubs. Last year, Manchester United and Liverpool topped the list of earnings, with the Premier League champions collecting UK?51.5 million. Liverpool also broke the UK?50 million mark, albeit narrowly, collecting UK?50.1 million.
The 20 Premier League clubs collected a total of UK?790 million, with UK?70 million of parachute payments made to clubs relegated into the Championship and a further UK?136 million distributed throughout the game. Those amounts will increase again from next season as the next period of rights begins.
