    Online software update

I am using a Vu+ clone called Solo Pro V3 and am running OpenATV 5.1. I have checked the available software updates and there are 162 listed. Is it advisable to update using this method, I have done this once before and my box refused to boot afterwards.

    Cheers

Depends on whether Openatv supported your clone box ie Openatv support Zgemmas so it is safe to do OTA but Openvix doesn't so it always advised not to update zgemma running openvix OTA.

It is never safe to do online updates with a clone receiver

I tried it again and the box wouldn't boot. Had to reflash so no permanent damage. It annoys me having 162 updates available and not being able to install them.

        Cheers

No image makers will ever support clone boxes, clones are generally poor quality copies which at best can be unstable and at worst dangerous. Without scare mongering you will never get a home insurance payout should the worst happen and a box not produced to British standard is found to being the cause.

people fail to see the bigger picture when buying clones = support and warranty because without these your stuck in the past.

I can't speak for the motives of others but personally speaking I wanted something as cheap as possible so that it didn't cause me too much heartache should I mess it up. I'd never even seen a clone before and wanted to judge their performance for myself. I have to say I have been very surprised and delighted by what I got. The box works perfectly, better than my other box which isn't a clone, the only down is the remote, which to my mind is sub standard.

Looking at the site I got it from there are loads of people buying and most leave positive five star comments, that's why I got it. It wasn't a difficult decision and I don't regret if for a second.

I don't know mate. But safety is a pretty much standard thing to be built in I would've thought. It hasn't blown up like a hoverboard anyway. LOL

I've never seen any stories in the press about fires caused by them. I am sure you would get one or two flaky units in a batch though. I think they cut corners on quality testing post production. Might be why the sellers put an image on and test them, mine had Chinese satellites pre-set.

You often find that components used are substandard (rejected for use in original receivers) to keep the costs down and built in an environment not ideal for electronics. As we have said if your lucky the psu will fail rather than overheat and catch fire. I have owned clones in the past and would never knock them as there is a market for them (some are built better than others) but nowadays there are plenty fairly decent original boxes around the hundred quid mark.

Continuing from my posts in this thread http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f193/duo-clone-broke-afternoon-help-271538/ where meggiedude had problems with his Vu Duo clone I decided to get one to see what all the fuss is all about :) meggiedude had reported that his PSU didn't look that great and the Duo clone PSU is pretty

Long enough for me to make a judgement on the performance and buy a more expensive one when the need arises. Corrosion would be a problem in my flat anyway, I've had steel beds collapse, eaten away by the salt air. I didn't know anything at all about them so there was no way I would splash out on an expensive receiver. It is a try before you buy.

I like the look of the Meelo SE. That might be my next box.

@Technophobic, Updates for your solo are only important if they fix or improve something on the box, if the backup image your using works and doesn't crash every 30 seconds then you don't need an update. However, one thing that is nice to be updated on a regular basics is your channel bouquet compiler ie Autobouquetsmaker or Autobouquets E2 so that you can get all the new channel in the correct place. You can easily update this manually by removing the appropriate plugin then reinstalling the appropriate plugin. This can be done via menu-plugins. Once done reboot your box and set your complier for your region (might be worth making a note of these setting before removing plugin) and scan.
