    Upgrading and confused.

    Hello all,

I would like to apologize if i say anything out of turn which doesn't coincide with the rules.

I've got two Openbox v5s currently in operation. They both work fine, and i have no issues with them. They run off one sub.

I'm now looking to upgrade to something more recent, but also, I would PREFER to have a box which has access to ALL ***HD*** channels (if at all possible). I know it has been said that HD channels do not work with openboxes but i'm inclined to believe that they work with others?

I'd prefer to update, said box, via ftp or via my PC if at all possible, but i'm also happy to do it via USB.

    Can anyone re-commend a relevant box? I have a 8 way LNB and a single dish with 85 - 95% signal strength.

My Budget is around... say... ?200, max.

    Thanks

The lack of HD has nothing to do with Openbox. You won't get access to 'ALL ***HD*** channels' on any satellite box.

      wot he said above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

      ie:- no chance

if it was possible , your current boxes would manage it , assuming they already get BBC1 HD and ITV HD and C4 HD etc

there may be a few HD channels that "may" be available elsewhere , but I do not believe the OP meant anywhere other than where his dish is currently pointing

and he also said the word "ALL" , ALL is impossible , there is no way that ALL is achievable

Thank you all for the response.

After consideration, i think i'll just get another openbox.

It may be much simpler than messing around with getting a VM sub and another box, or a motorized dish.

I appreciate the time taken out to reply.

                Thank you.

if you were to get another box , you should look at the VU or Zgemma boxes , not openboxes

I have a VU solo 2 with internal hdd , wouldnt be without it but its a learning curve to start with

Do you already have a cable connection to your property, even though you don't currently subscribe to VM?

I left VM many years ago (5 or 6?) & still have a live feed. Of course it's not guaranteed & could go off at any moment, but I'm making the most of it while it lasts.

If you are wired for cable, the only way to tell if you still have a feed, is to beg, steal or borrow a cable box from someone nearby & try it on your connection.

                      Hi Ramjet,

Are these practically the same as the openbox setup? (plug and play, update channels every so often), but with the addition of recording functionality?

                      What else do they offer?

                      Hi Hadron,

Many moons ago i had a cable to the property, but it was removed when the drive was done. Currently have FTTC from BT then adsl to property.

Any other recommendations or am i all of out juice?

Enigma 2 boxes (VU/Zgemma etc) aren't plug and play but they're easy enough to master if you're prepared to make a bit an effort.

If you don't have VM cable then it's either sat or iptv.

Setting up an enigma 2 box from scratch requires a lot of effort, but if you buy a Zgemma H.2S for example, then there are ready made backup images that do nearly all the hard work for you. martin035 has uploaded such an image in this thread:-

This Backup Image is for the Newer H series of Zgemma Satellite receivers, it will work on the H.S and H.2s and confirmed working on the H.2H by Hadron @post #116 (requires additional setup for cable see post #119) but hasn't been tested on the H5 Openatv5.3 Backup Image with New improved Sky Skin, OTA update safe ?

All you need to do is add your magic numbers (which is incredibly easy in the latest backup). Once it's set up, you no longer need to keep flashing the latest channel lists, as the box updates channels & bouquets automatically overnight. So once you have it set up as you want, it's actually less hassle to keep up to date than an openbox/skybox.

Obviously, you still won't get the premium HD channels, unless you get the H.2H box & re-subscribe to VM.
