    New To Satalites.

    Hey people.

Just wondering if anyone on the forum would be able to give me a push in the right direction when it comes to satalites etc.?

The situation is that im moving out. My Kryptview will be left in the shed to rot as i cannot get virgin to use it.. The only thing i can get is sky, or bt. I dont really want either, so i thought id come on here to see about satalites and what i would need to do to get set up.

What exactly would i need to get set up? Im on a budget but by al means tell it how it is. If i need to get something expensive then i will try my best. Also, isit hard to set up? i do have a sky dish if thats any use.

    Thanks in advance.

Ps. Kings somborne in hampshire is where im moving too if that makes any difference.

hi lankytoad and welcome to digital kaos
first forroget your sky dish as it to small. What i would recomend is a dreambox 500s(?80) unless you want a HD box then i would say a DM800(?350) as for a dish i no less than a 80cm(?50) a motor technome 2300 (?35) so good quailty coax and 4 F plug conectors(?4) a sat meter (?15) all the prices are aprox
You will need a internet conection and a rooter
then you will need a good place to mount the dish with a clear view of south
Setting up the dish can be done quite easly for the average DIYer there are giude on here to help you.
as for setting up the box its self you would need a basic knollage of pc and networking

If you want to keep it simple go for a non linux box such as one of the technomate 3/5/6000 series stbs.but I must admit the trend is towards linux.

        Or maybe a Protek.

Opens a good few packages for footy and adult.

Whatever you choose you must get a motorised set up.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it.

Firestorm, that bird would get it. . How come you need a router mate? Do you 100 percent need one and why if i may ask? thanks

Ok, i found this online. TECHNOMATE 3150D 80 CM MOTORISED SYSTEM - ?144.00 : Wizard Satellite, Satellite receivers, dishes, lnbs and equipment

Dont laugh if its wrong because i really dont know a lot about satalites. Would this be sufficient? Also what sort of channels would i be able to recieve, if thats an answerable question.

          Thanks again. Lanky.

The resason why i recomened a dreambox is because it is a linux box were as the technomate is not.
At the moment all the major sat companys use one of two types of encryption NDS (sky) or Nagra3 which have not been hacked or likely to be in the near future.
So in order to open these channels we need alternative method which only linux boxs can do and in order to use these method your box must be connected to the internet via a rooter if you google cardsharing you will find out what i am going on about as the subject is banned here

Ok, thanks for that. So you reccomend a dreambox. Are there any other makes apart from dreambox you would reccomend? I will look on google for that now.

                  Lankytoad,

Dreambox my well br the road to follow, but in my humble opinion, you have to have some, if not a lot, of knowledge of linux. I cannot really comment, as have have never used one. Also, you have to have knowledge of CC, of which you wont really get much help with as most forums ban talking about it. Maybe this would be something to persue sometime down the line when you have gathered more knowledge of satellites and encryptions etc, if like most you think sat viewing = S*y.

I would say for a begginer, google protek ip box. It needs flashing with software to get you up and running, and you also need to connect to a router, but is damned near to plug and play as you will get whilst cracking packages. Off the top of my head I think it opens 15 or so, giive or take. S*x view, S*y germ, Di**alb, to name a few. It's the best ?120 I spent on a box and no forking out for cards or subs.

At this time best to avoid technomates etc, as good a box as they are, you wont open much unless you go down the route of official subs. Cams and softcams dont get much these days.

One bit of advise, dont scrimp, spend as much as you can afford, you pay out once for your dish set up, so get it right.

thats pretty good advice from wooper m8.
i'm just in the process of moving to the sat site and reading up on linux can scramble the brain, trust me.this sat lark takes a lot more working out than cable.
i'm running a techno at the mo but have bought the protek 9600 and i'm just going to take one step at a time before i hopefully get to using linux.

                      Mark, cheers.

My first sat was (apart from sly years back), fixed on 13e for the old ART sport.

MOved on to getting a Diablo cam. That opened a fair bit, but trying to programe the thing, well, not the most difficukt thing ever, but gave me a headache.

My advice, if you are starting out, keep things sinple as you can. Protek is a good choice and you will have lots of fun once it is up and running. There is some work to do to get it running, but if I can do it then most can.

All good advice the only thing I would probably disagree with is that it is not really necessary to have a lot linux knowledge though it helps. I have a cable and sat dm600 and what I have found is good pc knowledge is much more useful. You need to be able to do basic telnet and ftp files to your dreambox using your pc. What you will need with sat is lots of patience and determination.

i'll back up curious on this one.. a higher than average knowledge of pc and networking is required.. you will have to input linux code into various places but you dont have to understand it, just know where it goes.. its helpful to have a linux base knowledge but nowhere near essential
